China and US to Create AI Safety Channel Amid Ongoing Talks

China and US to Create AI Safety Channel Amid Ongoing Talks

Posted on September 26, 2026 By CWS

In a significant move, China and the United States have agreed to establish a dedicated channel to manage incidents related to artificial intelligence (AI). This decision follows a three-day summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, which concluded on Saturday. The two nations also committed to speeding up efforts to enhance communication on military crises.

Strengthening Trade and Military Communication

As part of their ongoing cooperation, China and the U.S. will continue discussions through a newly operational Board of Trade. This board is tasked with addressing key bilateral issues, according to a statement from the White House. Although the summit did not yield any major breakthroughs, analysts note that the establishment of working groups is a crucial step towards preventing potential disputes.

President Xi returned to Beijing on Saturday, with China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reporting a notably cordial atmosphere during the meetings, despite the previous year’s trade tensions initiated by Trump. Both leaders agreed to sign a memorandum aimed at bolstering crisis communication and minimizing military conflicts. However, the specifics of this agreement remain sparse.

AI Dialogue and Trade Agreements

The two governments plan to initiate a dialogue focused on AI in November, emphasizing the need for a communication mechanism to address AI-related incidents. Despite these cooperative efforts, President Trump has made it clear that the U.S. will not decelerate its AI advancements, highlighting the competitive edge the country holds over China in this area.

Additionally, both nations have pledged to work towards reducing reciprocal tariffs on goods worth approximately $30 billion. This includes an agreement by China to import at least 10 million metric tons of U.S. coal in the coming years. The agreed tariff reductions primarily target non-sensitive items, such as agricultural produce.

Future Engagements and Global Issues

Looking ahead, the two countries are scheduled to reconvene at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, and later at the G20 summit in Florida. Both governments expressed a unified stance on global matters, urging Iran to adhere to its non-nuclear weapon commitments and condemning tolls on international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. welcomed China’s decision to impose additional export controls on chemicals used to produce fentanyl, acknowledging recent arrests related to the drug. Although fundamental differences between the nations remain unresolved, the progress made at the summit is seen as a positive development.

Experts emphasize the importance of personal diplomacy between Xi and Trump, noting that the focus on working-level engagements and military dialogue is an attempt to create a stable and institutionalized relationship.
