Chinese Hackers Exploit VMware ESXi Flaw as Zero-Day

Chinese Hackers Exploit VMware ESXi Flaw as Zero-Day

Posted on October 29, 2026 By CWS

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued a warning concerning a new vulnerability being exploited in VMware’s ESXi platform. This flaw, identified as CVE-2026-41709, is characterized by inadequate logging capabilities, which could allow attackers with administrative access to execute operations unnoticed.

Details of the Vulnerability

The vulnerability was publicly disclosed on July 29, along with a set of other critical and high-severity issues affecting VMware products such as vCenter, Workstation, and Fusion. VMware has since released patches for ESXi versions 9.1.0.0-25370933, 9.0.2.0100-25595025, and ESXi80U3j-25429389, addressing the flaw.

CISA has included CVE-2026-41709 in its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and has urged federal agencies to apply the necessary patches within a two-week timeframe.

Exploitation by Chinese Hackers

Although CISA has not shared specific details about the exploitation, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has reported that a China-linked threat actor known as Warp Panda has been actively using this vulnerability as a zero-day exploit. Victims include US-based organizations such as law firms, where Warp Panda allegedly gains initial access via internet-facing devices before targeting VMware vCenter systems.

During these intrusions, Warp Panda has reportedly deployed malware tools like BrickStorm and TetanusStorm, significantly diminishing audit trail visibility through the exploitation of CVE-2026-41709.

Broader Implications and Other Vulnerabilities

This security incident is part of a broader pattern of exploitation involving different vulnerabilities disclosed by Broadcom in July. Notably, CVE-2026-59309, a critical authentication bypass, and CVE-2026-59310, a directory traversal flaw leading to arbitrary code execution, have also been targeted.

In mid-August, cybersecurity firm Quirso identified an advanced persistent threat (APT) exploiting CVE-2026-59310, compromising approximately 360 web-accessible VMware vCenter servers. These activities have also been linked to Chinese threat actors, with warnings that CVE-2026-59309 was likely exploited earlier by potentially different attackers.

Mass exploitation of CVE-2026-59310 was reported in early September, highlighting the urgency for organizations to prioritize patching these vulnerabilities.

As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, it is critical for organizations to stay informed and proactive in implementing security patches to safeguard their systems against emerging threats.
