Cyberattack Foiled at Poland’s Nuclear Research Facility

Cyberattack Foiled at Poland’s Nuclear Research Facility

Posted on March 16, 2026 By CWS

Poland’s prominent nuclear research institution recently faced a cyberattack, with initial indications pointing to Iranian hackers as the perpetrators. This incident highlights the increasing threats faced by critical infrastructure in the nation.

Overview of the Targeted Institution

The National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) stands as Poland’s foremost entity in the field of nuclear science and technology. It not only operates the MARIA nuclear research reactor but also engages in extensive research covering nuclear and particle physics, reactor engineering, and the development of radiopharmaceuticals for medical purposes, alongside other industrial and environmental applications.

While NCBJ plays a crucial role in supporting Poland’s civilian nuclear energy initiatives, it does not partake in military activities, and Poland itself does not maintain a nuclear arsenal.

Details of the Cyberattack

In a recent announcement, NCBJ confirmed that its IT systems were targeted by a hacking attempt. However, the attack was successfully repelled, ensuring that no systems were compromised. The center’s director, Jakub Kupecki, assured the public that all operations, including those of the MARIA reactor, continue smoothly and securely.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski revealed to TVN24+ news that preliminary signs suggest Iranian involvement in the hacking effort. Yet, he warned that this could be a deceptive maneuver to mislead the investigation and obscure the actual source.

Context and Related Incidents

This cyberattack on Poland’s nuclear research facility follows an earlier incident approximately two months ago when the country’s power grid was targeted. That attack, attributed to a Russian group, did not cause power outages but did inflict lasting damage on some industrial control systems.

These instances underscore the growing cybersecurity challenges faced by nations worldwide, particularly those involving critical infrastructure.

As the digital landscape evolves, the need for robust cybersecurity measures becomes increasingly critical to safeguard against such threats. The incident at the NCBJ serves as a reminder of the persistent risks and the importance of vigilance in protecting national assets.
