Owner Charged in $11M Fraudulent Ransomware Scheme

Posted on October 8, 2026 By CWS

A US business owner is facing serious charges after allegedly deceiving clients in a fraudulent ransomware remediation operation that amassed millions in profits.

Ransomware Fraudulent Practices Unveiled

Zohar Pinhasi, 50, who runs MonsterCloud and holds US and Israeli citizenship, appeared in court in New York to confront charges of wire fraud. Known by aliases ‘Zack Silver’ and ‘Zack Green’, Pinhasi is accused of misleading customers with false claims about his company’s capabilities.

The indictment highlights accusations that Pinhasi assured organizations affected by ransomware that MonsterCloud could restore their data without succumbing to ransom demands. Contrary to these assurances, he allegedly advised victims against paying attackers while asserting that his firm possessed unique decryption tools.

Alleged Deceptive Operations

Pinhasi is accused of secretly negotiating with ransomware groups, paying them to secure decryption keys, and subsequently charging clients hefty fees for data recovery. In one notable case, he reportedly made an $8,200 payment to a ransomware affiliate, only to bill the client approximately $150,000 for the recovery operation.

Over the course of the scheme, Pinhasi allegedly paid more than $8 million in ransoms while charging clients over $19 million, thus generating significant profits through deceptive practices.

Legal Repercussions and Future Implications

Facing charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, Pinhasi’s actions could potentially lead to decades of imprisonment if convicted. Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva commented on the case, stating that Pinhasi is accused of exploiting victims further by offering false solutions, thereby compounding their losses.

This case highlights ongoing challenges in cybersecurity and the importance of transparency and ethical practices in data recovery services. The outcome could set precedents for how similar cases are handled in the future.

Related cases include arrests of other cybercrime suspects, such as a Qilin ransomware suspect in Japan and a developer of Ploutus ATM malware apprehended by the FBI.
