James Bishop Appointed Pentagon’s New Cybersecurity Chief

James Bishop Appointed Pentagon’s New Cybersecurity Chief

Posted on March 6, 2026 By CWS

The Department of Defense has appointed James ‘Aaron’ Bishop as the new deputy chief information officer for cybersecurity and chief information security officer (CISO). This appointment marks a significant shift in leadership within the department’s cybersecurity ranks.

Background and Experience

James Bishop, a veteran of the Navy, officially began his duties in an acting capacity on February 27. This announcement was made by the Office of the Department of Defense Chief Information Officer on Thursday. Bishop’s extensive experience includes his previous role as the CISO for the Department of the Air Force. Additionally, he has held executive positions in the private sector at major companies such as Microsoft and SAIC.

Role and Responsibilities

The position of DCIO(CS)-CISO is pivotal within the Department of Defense. It involves providing expert policy guidance, technical oversight, and program support across the department on all matters related to cybersecurity. Bishop’s appointment follows the retirement of David McKeown, whose federal service spanned over four decades. McKeown is transitioning to a new role in the private sector.

Recent Appointments in Cybersecurity

This leadership change coincides with Nick Andersen’s recent appointment as acting director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Andersen, who has been the executive assistant director for cybersecurity at CISA, replaces Madhu Gottumukkala, who will serve as the director of strategic implementation at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

These developments highlight ongoing shifts in the cybersecurity landscape, emphasizing the importance of strategic leadership in safeguarding national security interests. Related news includes former CISA Director Jen Easterly being named CEO of RSAC and Tim Kosiba’s appointment as NSA Deputy Director. Additionally, Casie Antalis has been appointed to lead a CISA program, underscoring the dynamic changes within cybersecurity leadership.
