Origin Energy Confirms Data Breach Impacting Millions

Origin Energy Confirms Data Breach Impacting Millions

Posted on July 24, 2026 By CWS

Origin Energy, a leading electricity and gas retailer in Australia, has officially acknowledged a data breach, with a hacker claiming access to the data of millions of customers. As one of the largest providers in the country, Origin Energy also participates in power generation and renewable energy projects.

Investigation into Cybersecurity Incident

On July 22, Origin Energy announced the launch of an investigation into a potential cybersecurity incident that may have compromised customer information. By July 23, the company confirmed that unauthorized parties had accessed some customer data, although the full extent of the breach remains undetermined.

According to the company, the compromised data may include names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, account information, and partial payment card or bank account numbers. Origin has engaged external cybersecurity experts to aid in the investigation and has informed Australian law enforcement and cybersecurity agencies.

Customer Notification and Potential Ransom Threat

Origin Energy is in the process of contacting affected customers to notify them of the breach. Meanwhile, a person claiming responsibility for the attack contacted 7News, alleging that information from 2 million individuals was stolen and may be leaked unless a ransom is paid.

The company, which serves approximately 4.8 million customers, has not yet commented on these ransom claims or provided additional details about the potential impact on their operations.

Response and Industry Impact

While Origin Energy has not reported any disruptions to its production or critical operations, the breach raises significant concerns within the energy sector. As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, companies must remain vigilant to protect sensitive customer data.

In related news, similar breaches have affected other organizations, highlighting the growing importance of robust cybersecurity measures across industries. Companies are increasingly seeking ways to secure their systems against such threats.

As Origin Energy continues its investigation, the focus remains on assessing the full impact of the breach and enhancing cybersecurity defenses to prevent future incidents. Meanwhile, affected customers are advised to monitor their accounts for any suspicious activity.
