RingCentral Data Breach Exposes 1.6 Million Records

RingCentral Data Breach Exposes 1.6 Million Records

Posted on August 14, 2026 By CWS

In a significant cybersecurity incident, personal details of 1.6 million users have reportedly been compromised from RingCentral, a prominent business communications platform. The breach is attributed to the ShinyHunters extortion group, known for targeting large organizations.

Details of the Cyber Attack

The breach, which took place in July, was a result of a complex social engineering attack, according to a statement released by RingCentral on their website. Once the unauthorized access was detected, the company swiftly initiated countermeasures to halt further breaches, with assistance from a reputable third-party forensic firm. Since implementing these measures, no further unauthorized activities have been reported.

RingCentral has assured that only a minor segment of their clientele was affected, with individual notifications sent to those directly impacted. They have emphasized that the core functionalities of their platform remain intact and operational, unaffected by this breach.

ShinyHunters’ Involvement

While RingCentral has not officially named the perpetrators, the ShinyHunters group has listed the company on their Tor-based leak site in late July, claiming responsibility for exfiltrating over 623 gigabytes of data. In retaliation to RingCentral’s refusal to meet their demands, ShinyHunters released a 280GB archive purportedly containing the compromised data.

Security experts have been monitoring the situation closely, and the data breach site HaveIBeenPwned has added this incident to its database, identifying approximately 1.6 million unique email addresses along with names, addresses, and phone numbers.

RingCentral’s Response and Future Outlook

As of now, RingCentral has not corroborated the extortion group’s claims or the extent of the data breach. The company is under scrutiny to provide further clarification on the issue. SecurityWeek has reached out to RingCentral for additional comments and will update developments as they unfold.

RingCentral continues to serve as a leading provider of cloud-based unified communications and contact center solutions, offering services such as business telephony, team messaging, and AI-powered collaboration tools. The company remains vigilant in enhancing its security framework to mitigate future threats.

This incident underscores the vital importance of robust cybersecurity measures and user vigilance in safeguarding sensitive information. As cyber threats evolve, organizations must continuously adapt their defenses to protect user data effectively.
