From Hacker to Defender: Tal Kollander’s Cybersecurity Journey

Posted on July 28, 2026 By CWS

Tal Kollander’s career is a tale of transformation, marked by her evolution from a hacker to a defender of cybersecurity. Originally from Tel Aviv, Israel, Kollander’s journey in the cyber world began with a deep curiosity for technology and a knack for hacking, which she later channeled into protecting systems from cyber threats.

Understanding the Hacker Mindset

Kollander defines a hacker as someone who accesses computer systems without permission, driven by creative yet illicit methods. She categorizes hackers into white hats, who ethically report vulnerabilities, and black hats, who exploit them for personal gain. Grey hat hackers operate in both realms, sometimes acting ethically, other times not. This classification helps differentiate actions based on morality rather than patriotism or external pressures.

The Path to Ethical Hacking

Her journey into hacking began innocently through online gaming, where curiosity drove her to understand computer systems deeply. From learning basic programming languages during her school years, she moved on to complex hacking tasks. Her interest in hacking extended beyond gaming as she explored social media vulnerabilities, further fueling her desire to address new challenges in IT security.

Kollander’s skills were recognized during her mandatory military service in Israel. As part of the IDF’s computer units, she transitioned from hacking for personal interest to defending her country’s critical infrastructure. This experience shifted her perspective, leading her to pursue a career in cybersecurity defense.

Leading in Cyber Defense

After leaving the IDF in 2011, Kollander embarked on a career focused on cybersecurity. She held prominent roles such as deputy CISO at MalamTeam Ltd and security architect at EMC, now Dell EMC. Despite her corporate roles, she maintained the mindset of a hacker, constantly seeking to understand and mitigate security threats.

In 2019, she co-founded Gytpol, later rebranded as Remedio, focusing on teaching organizations about hacker techniques and preventing breaches. The company emphasizes the importance of addressing configuration drifts in infrastructures, which hackers exploit to penetrate systems.

At Remedio, Kollander’s mission is to not only identify vulnerabilities but to resolve them before they are exploited. Her intimate knowledge of hacker tactics, derived from her own experiences, informs her approach to cybersecurity, ensuring that potential entry points are secured against attacks.

A Vision for Change

Tal Kollander’s transformation from hacker to cybersecurity leader underscores her belief in the potential for change. While she grew up understanding the hacker world, her goal now is to foster environments where ethical practices prevail. She advocates for understanding the motivations behind hacking and addressing them to create a safer digital landscape.

In her current role, Kollander continues to challenge the status quo, using her expertise to build robust defenses against cyber threats. Her journey illustrates the impact of channeling technical skills into constructive avenues, setting an example for aspiring cybersecurity professionals worldwide.
