US Cybersecurity Expert Jailed for Assisting Ransomware Group

US Cybersecurity Expert Jailed for Assisting Ransomware Group

Posted on July 10, 2026 By CWS

In a significant development in the ongoing battle against cybercrime, a US cybersecurity expert has been sentenced to prison for his involvement with a notorious ransomware group. The individual in question, Angelo Martino, hailing from Florida, was handed a 70-month prison term on Thursday. This decision follows his guilty plea in April, marking him as one of three US-based cybersecurity professionals charged last year for their participation in ransomware activities.

Martino’s Role in Cybercrime

Angelo Martino, 41, was implicated for his role in assisting the BlackCat/Alphv ransomware operators. Authorities revealed that Martino started collaborating with the hackers in April 2023, aiding them in extorting at least five different organizations. His position as a ransomware negotiator at a cybersecurity firm enabled him to provide insider information to the threat actors, thus enhancing their ability to extract higher ransoms from victims.

Martino’s actions were not isolated. Alongside him, two other cybersecurity experts, Kevin Martin and Ryan Goldberg, were convicted and sentenced to four years in prison each. These individuals exploited their roles at cybersecurity firms to benefit financially from ransomware attacks, betraying the trust placed in them by their employers and clients.

Financial Repercussions and Asset Seizure

The consequences of Martino’s actions extended beyond his prison sentence. Law enforcement agencies seized assets worth $10 million from him, which included cryptocurrency holdings, vehicles, a food truck, and a fishing boat. While the exact restitution amount Martino must pay remains undetermined, a hearing is set for September to finalize these financial penalties.

These seizures highlight the lucrative nature of cybercrime, as well as the diverse forms of wealth accumulation associated with illegal activities. The case underscores the importance of vigilance and integrity within the cybersecurity community, as breaches of trust can have significant repercussions.

Impact on Ransomware Operations

The BlackCat ransomware group, responsible for targeting over 1,000 organizations from 2021 to December 2023, has been a major focus for law enforcement. Despite the disruption of their operations, the group managed to secure a $22 million ransom from a victim before executing an exit scam. This incident illustrates the persistent threat posed by ransomware gangs and the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in combating cybercrime.

In response, the US government has offered a $10 million reward for information leading to the identification of key figures within the ransomware group. This initiative reflects the broader strategy to dismantle cybercriminal networks and hold those involved accountable.

As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, this case serves as a crucial reminder of the need for robust defenses and ethical practices within the industry.
