US Cybersecurity Job Market Shifts Amid Rising AI Demand

US Cybersecurity Job Market Shifts Amid Rising AI Demand

Posted on October 18, 2026 By CWS

The latest CyberSN report offers a detailed look into the evolving landscape of cybersecurity employment in the United States. This comprehensive analysis reveals a decrease in overall job postings, juxtaposed with a sharp rise in demand for roles related to artificial intelligence (AI).

Decline in Cybersecurity Job Postings

According to CyberSN’s data, which aggregates information from JobSpikr and classifies roles based on functional categories, the US cybersecurity job market has experienced a notable contraction. From January to September 2026, there were 235,786 cybersecurity job postings, reflecting a 26.4% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. This decline marks a four-year low in job availability.

Surge in AI-Related Roles

Despite the overall reduction, specific roles within the cybersecurity sector have witnessed significant growth. The demand for AI Security Engineers has skyrocketed by 268.3%, and the need for Cyber Data Scientists increased by 203.5% over the previous year. These figures indicate a heightened emphasis on AI expertise within the cybersecurity field.

AI’s influence is further demonstrated by its mention in nearly 15% of all job listings, with a noticeable peak of 20% in September 2026. This trend underscores the growing importance of AI skills across various cybersecurity functions.

Impact on Traditional Roles

While AI roles are flourishing, traditional cybersecurity positions are experiencing a decline. Roles such as Cyber Insider Threat Analyst and Cyber Risk Analyst have seen significant drops in job postings. Similarly, positions like Penetration Tester and Cybersecurity Lead have also faced reductions, signaling a shift in industry focus.

Interestingly, the number of Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) postings has decreased, aligning with 2024 levels despite a strong performance in 2025. This trend may reflect changing boardroom attitudes towards cybersecurity accountability.

Outlook and Future Trends

The CyberSN report primarily focuses on the quantity of job listings rather than the underlying reasons for these changes. However, it highlights the noise in job titles and emphasizes the need for clarity in role requirements. As the demand for AI expertise grows, individuals aiming for CISO positions may need to navigate a more complex job market.

Overall, while the future of traditional cybersecurity roles appears uncertain, the demand for AI-related skills presents new opportunities for job seekers. As the industry adapts, understanding these trends will be crucial for professionals and organizations alike.
