From Young Hacker to CEO: The Journey of Ben Harris

From Young Hacker to CEO: The Journey of Ben Harris

Posted on March 19, 2026 By CWS

Ben Harris, a prominent figure in the cybersecurity industry, has a unique and intriguing background. Known today as the founder and CEO of WatchTowr, Harris’s journey began in his youth when his curiosity about computers took an unexpected turn. Despite his parents’ aspirations for him to pursue a musical career, Harris’s passion for understanding computer systems led him to explore the world of hacking.

Early Fascination with Computers

Harris’s early years were marked by an interest in computers that diverged from his family’s hopes. Sent to a British boarding school at a young age, Harris was expected to cultivate musical talents. However, a chance discovery of a book about hackers in the school library sparked a different interest. He became captivated by the ability of computers to communicate with each other, which ignited a lifelong passion for understanding computer networks.

Despite his youthful rebellion, Harris’s hacking activities were driven by curiosity rather than malice. He was fascinated by the concept of accessing different computer systems and wanted to learn more about how they operated. This curiosity led him to explore school networks, often resulting in warnings and reprimands from school authorities, but never in any malicious intent or damage.

Educational Challenges and Breakthroughs

Harris’s educational journey was unconventional, marked by frequent changes in schools due to his exploratory activities. Despite these challenges, he managed to balance his passion for computers with the boundaries set by educational institutions. His final school required him to sign an agreement not to breach their acceptable use policy. However, Harris’s innate curiosity often led him to push these limits, ultimately resulting in his departure from formal education.

His school experiences reflected a broader issue within the educational system, which struggled to accommodate his interests. Rather than pursuing traditional academic paths, Harris focused on self-education through practical experimentation with computer systems. This hands-on approach laid the foundation for his future career in cybersecurity.

Transition to Professional Success

After leaving school, Harris quickly transitioned into the professional world of cybersecurity. He applied for pentesting positions and, despite initial setbacks due to low salary offers, secured a role at a reputable consultancy in London. This marked the beginning of a successful career, during which Harris honed his skills and advanced to significant positions, including Technical Director at F-Secure.

In 2021, Harris founded WatchTowr, a platform designed to provide real-time insights into potential vulnerabilities in clients’ systems. His journey from a curious young hacker to a respected CEO highlights the evolution of an individual who turned a childhood fascination into a pioneering career in cybersecurity.

Harris’s story underscores the importance of nurturing curiosity and passion, even when they deviate from traditional paths. His ethical stance, combined with a relentless pursuit of understanding computer systems, has positioned him as a leader in the field, offering valuable insights into the intersection of technology and security.
