Meta has revealed a significant international operation to combat fraudulent activities targeting its platform users. Collaborating with law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, the DOJ Scam Center Strike Force, and authorities in Thailand, the tech giant aims to dismantle scam centers in Southeast Asia.
Global Law Enforcement Collaboration
This joint effort has led to the arrest of 21 individuals by Thai police and the deactivation of over 150,000 accounts associated with these scam operations. Previously, a similar initiative in December resulted in the removal of 59,000 accounts, pages, and groups across Meta’s platforms.
These scam centers predominantly targeted users in regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Asia-Pacific. Meta’s proactive measures underscore its commitment to safeguarding its vast user base from cyber threats.
Introduction of Advanced Anti-Scam Tools
In its ongoing battle against online fraud, Meta has introduced several new protective tools. A notable feature warns WhatsApp users of dubious device-linking attempts, a tactic often used by scammers to gain unauthorized access to accounts.
Furthermore, Facebook users will benefit from alerts flagging suspicious friend requests, which are identified based on criteria like the absence of mutual friends, newly created profiles, and geographic discrepancies.
Enhanced AI-Driven Detection Systems
Meta is also enhancing its AI capabilities to identify scams impersonating well-known brands, celebrities, and public figures. This technology is geared towards detecting misleading links and counterfeit domains, fortifying the platform’s defense mechanisms.
Messenger users will experience improved scam detection features, further bolstering Meta’s comprehensive approach to user protection.
These efforts are part of Meta’s broader strategy to tackle fraudulent activities, illustrated by their removal of 159 million fraudulent advertisements in 2025.
By investing in robust anti-scam technologies and collaborating with global authorities, Meta continues to prioritize user safety and maintain trust in its digital ecosystem.
