Canonical has announced the release of Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS. This update to the long-term support version, codenamed ‘Noble Numbat’, introduces a refreshed installation image that includes the latest security updates, bug fixes, and an improved hardware enablement stack built around the Linux 7.0 kernel.

The major highlight of this release is the adoption of the Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernel stack, now upgraded to Linux 7.0. This update is derived from the more recent Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, known as ‘Resolute Raccoon’, and is complemented by the Mesa 26.2 graphics stack, enhancing GPU support.
For systems still utilizing the General Availability (GA) kernel, the original 6.8 series from the 24.04.0 release remains available. This ensures ongoing compatibility for enterprise environments that prioritize kernel stability over frequent updates.

This release also includes updated toolchain components. Developers will find GCC 14, glibc 2.39, Rust 1.75, and Python 3.12 as the default interpreter, allowing for modern language runtimes straight out of the box.
