Aflac Japan Cyberattack Exposes 4.38 Million Customers

Aflac Japan Cyberattack Exposes 4.38 Million Customers

Posted on June 30, 2026 By CWS

Aflac Life Insurance Japan, a major player in the insurance sector, has revealed a significant cybersecurity incident affecting 4.38 million individuals. This breach, announced on Tuesday, involved unauthorized access to personal information, prompting urgent remedial measures.

Details of the Cybersecurity Incident

The breach occurred between June 15 and June 25, marking a critical period during which hackers repeatedly infiltrated Aflac Japan’s systems. The intrusion was identified on June 25, as stated in a report filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Immediate actions were initiated to contain the breach and fortify defenses.

Aflac has clarified that the breach is confined to its Japanese operations and does not compromise its US systems. This geographical limitation is crucial for understanding the impact scope and reassuring stakeholders in other regions.

Impact on Services and Data Compromised

According to Aflac Japan, the cyberattack has disrupted at least five of its services. However, the company refrains from predicting when normal operations might resume. The attack specifically targeted the policyholder portal, compromising personal data of millions of customers and agents.

The stolen data encompasses a wide range of personal details: names, addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, gender, and insurance-related information. Notably, the hackers accessed the insurance premium transfer account information of approximately 230,000 individuals, although credit card information remains secure.

Ongoing Response and Investigation

In response to this breach, Aflac Japan is working with third-party cybersecurity experts to conduct a thorough investigation. Aflac also informed relevant authorities to ensure compliance and enhance its response strategy. Affected individuals will receive personalized notifications detailing the specific data compromised.

This incident underscores the growing cybersecurity challenges within the insurance industry, emphasizing the need for robust protective measures. As investigations continue, the focus remains on preventing future breaches and safeguarding customer trust.

While Aflac Japan navigates this complex situation, the broader insurance sector is reminded of the critical importance of cybersecurity vigilance.
