Chrome 151 Update Addresses 382 Security Flaws

Google has released Chrome 151, introducing significant security enhancements by resolving 382 vulnerabilities, including 15 classified as critical. These critical bugs, if left unaddressed, could enable remote code execution and potentially compromise the browser’s integrity.

Comprehensive Update for Multiple Platforms

The latest update is being deployed across various platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chrome for iOS. It brings security improvements to nearly every fundamental component of the browser.

According to Google’s release notes, the Chrome Vulnerability Rewards Program has been instrumental in identifying these issues, which are now patched in version 151 (desktop build 150.0.7871.46). Detailed bug information remains limited until the majority of users have applied the update, adhering to Google’s coordinated disclosure policy.

Addressing Critical Vulnerabilities

The update tackles a range of vulnerabilities, from critical remote code execution risks to low-severity issues affecting UI and policy enforcement. These flaws impact various browser components, including web, graphics, casting, networking, and iOS-specific features.

Google’s internal teams, utilizing advanced memory-safety tools like AddressSanitizer and MemorySanitizer, identified many of these bugs. Notably, 15 of the fixed vulnerabilities are deemed critical, primarily categorized as “use after free” issues in high-risk areas such as Extensions, GPU, and WebUSB.

Significant Impact and Recommendations

Exploiting these vulnerabilities could allow attackers to bypass protective measures, leading to severe outcomes such as heap corruption or unauthorized control flow. Beyond the critical issues, a considerable number of high-severity vulnerabilities have also been addressed.

To mitigate potential risks, Google advises users to update to Chrome 151 promptly. Enterprise security teams should prioritize deploying the update across managed systems, especially those dependent on extensions and remote desktop functions.

Organizations are encouraged to review their security settings, ensuring that features like extension governance and site isolation policies are aligned with the new protections. Enabling automatic updates and monitoring security advisories can further reduce vulnerability exposure in the future.

This comprehensive update underscores the importance of maintaining robust browser security in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
