Cyber Attacker Pleads Guilty for Major Data Breach

Cyber Attacker Pleads Guilty for Major Data Breach

Posted on August 6, 2026 By CWS

Connor Riley Moucka has admitted guilt in a significant cybercrime case linked to breaching Snowflake accounts of 165 different organizations. This cybercriminal, aged 26, has been charged with computer fraud, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy, potentially facing a prison sentence exceeding 30 years. The sentencing is set for October 27.

Details of the Cybercrime Campaign

Moucka was captured in late 2024 in Canada and subsequently extradited to the United States in July 2025. According to reports, Moucka, initially identified under the alias Alexander ‘Connor’ Moucka, was involved with a cybercriminal group using stolen credentials to infiltrate organizational Snowflake data storage accounts.

This group, tracked as UNC5537, targeted major firms such as AT&T, Advance Auto Parts, Ticketmaster, Santander Bank, and others. The hackers appropriated billions of data records containing sensitive personal and financial information, using extortion tactics to gain $2.5 million in ransom payments.

Financial Impact and Criminal Earnings

Beyond ransom earnings, the cybercriminals, including Moucka, profited by selling the stolen data on illicit forums, with Moucka reportedly earning half a million dollars. The Department of Justice (DOJ) noted that the impacted companies endured losses surpassing $9.5 million, excluding the potential financial harm to over 100 million individual customers.

Additionally, a former US soldier, who previously admitted to hacking into AT&T and Verizon networks, is suspected of being involved in the Snowflake hacking spree.

Broader Implications and Future Outlook

This case underscores the growing threat and complexity of cybercrime, emphasizing the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures across organizations. As cyber threats evolve, companies must remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their data.

The outcome of Moucka’s sentencing may serve as a critical deterrent, aiming to discourage similar future cybercrimes. Authorities continue to combat cybercrime aggressively, as highlighted in related cases, including the imprisonment of a Belarusian ransomware leader and actions against Russian cybercriminal entities.

The ongoing battle against cybercrime remains crucial for protecting digital infrastructures and ensuring data security globally.
