F-Droid 2.0 Debuts with Major Redesign for App Discovery

F-Droid 2.0 Debuts with Major Redesign for App Discovery

Posted on September 26, 2026 By CWS

The open-source Android app repository, F-Droid, has unveiled version 2.0 of its Android app, marking the most significant update in a decade. This release comes after a year-long development process and the completion of 14 test builds, with a gradual rollout set for the upcoming weeks.

Redesign with Modern Technologies

F-Droid 2.0 is not just a visual update; it involves a substantial overhaul of the app’s architecture using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. This modernization aligns the app with Android’s Material Design guidelines, aiming to simplify future maintenance and enhance the development of new features.

The updated app now focuses its primary navigation on three sections: Discover, Search, and My Apps. The Discover area merges app browsing with category listings, while My Apps serves as a hub for installed applications and updates. Settings and Nearby Swap have been relocated to the top bar to declutter the main navigation interface.

Enhanced App Discovery and Search

A key aspect of F-Droid 2.0 is its improved app discovery capabilities. The Discover section now showcases newly added and recently updated apps, as well as popular downloads from the repository. Categories have been expanded to allow easier access to specific types of software, such as VPNs, firewalls, and password managers. Additionally, the Games category has been subdivided into 17 genres.

Search functionality has been significantly enhanced. Users can search through application names, descriptions, categories, and even translated text. The update also improves search support for languages with complex writing systems, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Users can refine their searches using multiple filters like category, device compatibility, and anti-features, catering to privacy-conscious individuals.

Improved Installation and Privacy Features

F-Droid 2.0 introduces changes to the update and installation processes. By default, the app now automatically checks for and installs updates, though manual control options remain available for those who prefer them. The previous pull-to-refresh method for updates has been moved to a submenu in My Apps.

The release benefits from Android platform changes influenced by the EU’s Digital Markets Act and antitrust measures, which allow alternative app stores to offer a more seamless installation experience. The app utilizes newer installer capabilities, enabling users to approve installations earlier in the process.

Privacy features have also been revised, with Tor configuration shifting towards general proxy settings and the Tor VPN being recommended for ease of use. The app-hiding feature now only alters the app’s icon and name, which can still be discovered through Android settings or forensic inspection. Notably, F-Droid 2.0 does not yet restore support for the F-Droid Privileged Extension or the panic-trigger app-wiping feature, which may prompt some users to delay upgrading.

Overall, F-Droid 2.0 represents a significant modernization of a key platform for distributing free and open-source Android software, offering enhanced app discovery, modern development practices, and a more efficient installation workflow.
