OpenSSL 4.1.0 Enhances Security with DTLS 1.3

OpenSSL 4.1.0 Enhances Security with DTLS 1.3

Posted on October 26, 2026 By CWS

OpenSSL has officially launched version 4.1.0, introducing Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) 1.3, enhanced cryptographic speeds, and new development tools for creating secure network services. These updates, announced on October 23, are part of a feature release rather than a security patch, warranting attention to compatibility adjustments and existing issues before implementation.

Key Features of OpenSSL 4.1.0

The most notable addition in OpenSSL 4.1.0 is DTLS 1.3, which is highlighted in the release notes. This follows the earlier preview of OpenSSL 4.1.0 Alpha1, which introduced DTLS 1.3 along with GREASE support and performance enhancements. DTLS 1.3, as defined in RFC 9147, extends the protections of TLS 1.3 to UDP-based applications, offering encryption and authentication without altering UDP’s inherent characteristics.

Technical Enhancements and Compatibility

OpenSSL 4.1.0 also integrates several technical improvements. These include support for GREASE, the IKEv2 key derivation function, and initial compatibility with the Elbrus2000 processor. Performance optimizations for cryptographic operations are evident, especially in ML-DSA and ML-KEM transforms on specific systems. However, the release notes do not provide specific performance metrics.

Developers are advised to update their dependencies, such as replacing WWW::Curl::Easy with Net::Curl::Easy for the tsget utility. Additionally, OpenSSL has removed Windows-on-Itanium and Windows CE build targets, focusing on enhancing MSVC 2013’s C99 support.

Known Issues and Recommendations

Four known issues relating to DTLS behavior have been identified. One involves the loss of pending post-handshake records when a DTLS 1.3 KeyUpdate is received, which can affect session ticket retransmission if original packets are lost. The release also notes limitations in error handling for SSL listeners, which could mislead applications about connection status, potentially causing premature disconnections.

It is recommended that development teams thoroughly test these scenarios before deploying the update in production environments. Previous OpenSSL DTLS memory-leak fixes provide relevant context, yet they are distinct from the current issues.

In conclusion, OpenSSL 4.1.0 represents a significant advancement in securing network applications, particularly those reliant on UDP. As security threats continue to evolve, timely integration of updates such as this is crucial in maintaining robust defense mechanisms.
