Zyxel Zero-Day Exploited in Major Switch Hacks

Zyxel Zero-Day Exploited in Major Switch Hacks

Posted on November 5, 2026 By CWS

A critical zero-day vulnerability in Zyxel’s GS1900 series switches has been exploited, affecting nearly 1,000 devices, according to cybersecurity firm Binarly. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-107441, was a previously unknown security flaw that allowed attackers to execute OS commands via crafted HTTP requests.

Understanding the Zyxel Vulnerability

Labelled with a CVSS score of 8.8, the flaw arises from an out-of-bounds write issue within the CGI program of the GS1900 series firmware. Zyxel responded by releasing a fix on October 23, followed by a public advisory on November 3, aiming to mitigate the threat.

Despite these efforts, Binarly has reported that threat actors had already been exploiting this flaw before it was patched. The attacks were initially linked to a Chinese hacking group, causing widespread concern among cybersecurity professionals.

Previous Misattributions and Real Targets

Prior to Binarly’s revelation, GreyNoise had suggested that an older Zyxel vulnerability, CVE-2026-7273, was being exploited by the same group. This was linked to Red Heron, known for targeting Gitea instances. However, Binarly’s analysis has since clarified that the attacks were directed at the newly discovered CVE-2026-107441 vulnerability.

The hackers employed variants of the Jitterly and Sixzut malware, as noted by Acronis, showcasing their persistent threat to network security. This has highlighted the need for more precise vulnerability assessment methods.

The Importance of Robust Cybersecurity Measures

Binarly’s discovery underscores the urgency for reliable vulnerability checks in software. The firm emphasizes that while advisories and version updates are beneficial, they should not be solely relied upon. Instead, examining the binary code of software components may provide a more accurate assessment of potential vulnerabilities.

This incident serves as a reminder for organizations to maintain updated security practices and to be vigilant against potential exploits. As cyber threats evolve, staying informed and prepared is crucial for protecting infrastructure from sophisticated attacks.

In conclusion, as cybersecurity threats continue to grow in complexity, the Zyxel zero-day exploit highlights the need for proactive measures and a deeper understanding of vulnerabilities. Ongoing vigilance and timely patching remain essential components in safeguarding against potential breaches.
