Critical Alert: BTCPay Server Hot Wallet Breach

Critical Alert: BTCPay Server Hot Wallet Breach

Posted on November 2, 2026 By CWS

BTCPay Server, a leading open-source payment platform, has issued an urgent alert to its users following reports of unauthorized access to Bitcoin hot wallets. The platform, which allows merchants to accept Bitcoin payments directly, has advised operators to immediately shut down their systems to prevent further losses while an investigation is underway.

Immediate Shutdown Urged

On November 1, BTCPay Server released a security notice warning that unspecified attackers were targeting hot wallets on its servers. Users were instructed to execute the command ./btcpay-down.sh to bring their systems offline during the investigation. The advisory did not specify affected software versions, raising concerns among operators using various versions of the platform.

Security Concerns and Preliminary Findings

Initial findings suggest that outdated installations might be particularly vulnerable. Nicolas Dorier, the founder of BTCPay Server, mentioned that compromised servers were running versions older than 2.4.2. Although the point of entry for these attacks remains unclear, the attackers reportedly gained administrative access.

Dorier also confirmed that public servers operating on version 2.4.7 had not experienced breaches. However, this does not guarantee security for all updated installations, and the broad shutdown advisory remains in effect until further notice.

Potential Risks and Security Measures

The incident underscores significant risks associated with using hot wallets, which store sensitive transaction data online for convenience. Breaches in server security can expose funds to unauthorized access, highlighting the need for rigorous security measures.

Despite the recent release of BTCPay Server 2.4.7, which addressed numerous security vulnerabilities, there is no confirmed link to the ongoing wallet drains. Past advisories concerning other issues, such as exposed Lightning Network Daemon credentials, have not been connected to this breach.

Conclusion and Next Steps

For now, the most critical action for operators is to keep their servers offline until BTCPay Server provides further guidance. Updating software should not be seen as a solution to the current compromise. Operators must remain vigilant, distinguishing between verified developer instructions and community speculations as the investigation progresses.

The situation highlights the ongoing challenges in securing cryptocurrency transactions and the importance of staying informed about potential vulnerabilities and protective measures.
