Phantom Stealer Conceals in PNG Files, Targets Data

Phantom Stealer Conceals in PNG Files, Targets Data

Posted on August 13, 2026 By CWS

Phantom Stealer, a sophisticated piece of malware, is utilizing a novel method to keep its activities under wraps by embedding itself within PNG files. This credential-stealing software is capable of extracting passwords, browser cookies, cryptocurrency wallet information, and other sensitive data from Windows computers.

Stealth Operations Through Familiar Files

Phantom Stealer has been detected in various global campaigns, targeting users through phishing emails, pirated software, and malicious links shared on platforms like Discord and Telegram. This method makes infection likely whenever a user engages with a suspicious download or message.

Security researchers at Splunk have identified this malware as being based on .NET and having a modular framework, enabling both novice and experienced cybercriminals to deploy it easily. The potential damage is significant: stolen session cookies could allow unauthorized access to accounts, and compromised wallet data could lead directly to financial losses.

Advanced Steganography Techniques

The malware’s use of PNG files is particularly concerning because these files appear benign and are commonly trusted. For instance, in one observed scenario, a .NET loader hid an executable within a PNG file. Only after decryption does the Phantom Stealer become active, complicating detection efforts.

Steganography, the practice of hiding information within ordinary-looking files, is not new. However, Phantom Stealer’s application of this technique amplifies its ability to evade detection by security systems, reminiscent of earlier campaigns where encrypted code was hidden in images.

Comprehensive Data Harvesting

Once operational, Phantom Stealer meticulously searches through browser databases and configuration files, extracting usernames, passwords, cookies, and payment-card details. The malware’s ability to hijack browser sessions is particularly dangerous, even for users employing multi-factor authentication.

It doesn’t stop at browsers; the malware targets cryptocurrency wallet extensions, desktop applications, and even clipboard activity to intercept wallet addresses. The malware can replace copied addresses with those controlled by the attacker, potentially redirecting funds unknowingly.

Protective Measures and Implications

Security experts recommend vigilance when encountering unusual PowerShell activities, remote process injections, and non-standard program access to browser data. Suspicious downloads and email attachments should be scrutinized, and unauthorized software should be blocked.

Organizations are advised to update passwords, sessions, and wallet credentials following a confirmed infection. The threat posed by Phantom Stealer underscores the importance of comprehensive cybersecurity strategies to safeguard against evolving threats.
