Cyberattack Exposes Data of 8.7 Million at UK Airports

Cyberattack Exposes Data of 8.7 Million at UK Airports

Posted on August 28, 2026 By CWS

In a significant cybersecurity incident, the personal information of approximately 8.7 million customers has been compromised following a cyberattack on Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which manages Manchester Airport, East Midlands Airport, and London Stansted Airport. The breach, which involved unauthorized system access, affected customer data such as email addresses, postcodes, and vehicle registration details.

Details of the Cyberattack

The attackers, who infiltrated the systems used by MAG, demanded a ransom for the stolen data. However, MAG confirmed that no payment was made. Despite the breach, MAG assured that there was no impact on passenger safety, airport operations, or aviation security. Furthermore, the compromised data did not include sensitive financial details like bank account information or payment-card data.

Most of the exposed information originated from passengers who had signed up for WiFi services within airport terminals. The breach mainly involved email addresses linked to these WiFi registrations. Additional customer data was accessed through airport-related services such as car park reservations, lounge bookings, and fast-track access, potentially exposing more detailed information.

Response and Mitigation Efforts

The breach was identified by MAG on a Tuesday, and immediate action was taken to prevent further unauthorized access. The airport operator engaged cybersecurity specialists to contain the situation and began notifying affected customers. MAG also informed relevant authorities and is cooperating with them during ongoing investigations. The company has refrained from publicly naming the hackers or disclosing the ransom amount.

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office has been notified about the breach and is currently evaluating the details provided by MAG. This incident underscores the vulnerabilities associated with digital services offered to customers, particularly WiFi portals and online booking systems.

Protecting Against Future Risks

Although payment information was not part of the compromised data, the stolen details can still be exploited for phishing and social engineering attacks. Customers might receive fraudulent communications appearing to be from the airports, such as fake notifications about flights or parking payments.

MAG has advised individuals to remain cautious of suspicious emails, messages, and calls. Customers should avoid interacting with unexpected messages, refrain from clicking on links from unknown sources, and never disclose personal information to unverified contacts. It is recommended to visit official airport websites for reliable information and enable multi-factor authentication on email accounts to enhance security.

To further protect themselves, users should utilize unique passwords and be vigilant about potential phishing attempts that impersonate airport or customer support communications. By staying informed and taking proactive measures, customers can safeguard their personal information against cyber threats.
