New Malware Targets AI Tokens, Bypassing Password Resets

New Malware Targets AI Tokens, Bypassing Password Resets

Posted on November 4, 2026 By CWS

Recent advancements in malware tactics have shifted focus towards AI tools, with cybercriminals targeting authentication tokens and session data from platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Codex. This strategy allows hackers to bypass traditional password security measures, posing a significant threat to users and businesses alike.

Malware Families Targeting AI Tokens

Two Windows-based malware families, WardenStealer and Aoki, have been identified as key players in this new wave of cyber threats. These programs gather credentials that remain valid even after a password change, leaving users vulnerable to unauthorized access.

Beyond gaining entry to chatbots, these stolen credentials can grant criminals access to connected services such as cloud platforms and source code repositories. This allows unauthorized actions under the guise of legitimate users, complicating detection and prevention efforts.

Research and Findings from SpyCloud

SpyCloud researchers uncovered these activities by analyzing infection logs rather than relying solely on malware code. Their October 30 report highlights over 130,000 WardenStealer infections since its detection in August 2026, underscoring the malware’s widespread impact.

WardenStealer operates as a Rust-based infostealer, marketed through malware-as-a-service channels. It targets not only browser data but also information from AI applications, using deceptive tactics like fake software and ads to spread.

Impact on Businesses and Security Measures

The theft of AI credentials poses financial risks, with underground markets offering AI subscriptions and credits at discounted rates. This situation, known as LLMjacking, enables criminals to exploit AI services using compromised accounts, leading to unexpected charges for victims.

Businesses must be vigilant against configuration theft, which can reveal sensitive internal processes. Experts advise incorporating AI credential checks into infostealer investigations, revoking active sessions, and rotating exposed keys to mitigate potential damage.

Security teams should monitor for unusual API consumption and ensure that stolen credentials are promptly invalidated. A comprehensive approach, including the review of connected services, is essential to fully address the threats posed by these evolving malware tactics.
