Microsoft Teams Desktop Faces Launch Issues on Windows

Microsoft Teams Desktop Faces Launch Issues on Windows

Posted on September 5, 2026 By CWS

Microsoft is currently investigating a problem affecting the Microsoft Teams desktop client on Windows platforms. Users have reported significant delays or failures when attempting to launch the application, disrupting their workflow.

Initial Reports and Acknowledgment

The issue, tracked internally by Microsoft as TM1466820, has been acknowledged by the company, which has yet to identify a definitive fix. Engineers are actively examining service logs to determine the root cause of the problem.

According to Microsoft, the disruption specifically affects the initial launch of Teams on Windows devices. Some users are unable to open the client, while others face delays of up to two minutes, hampering their ability to start work, join meetings, or check messages promptly.

Impact on Organizations and Workarounds

The scope of the issue has been classified as affecting “some users” across different organizations. Not every user within an affected organization will experience the slowdown, but it remains a significant inconvenience for those who do.

While a permanent solution is under development, Microsoft advises users to switch temporarily to the Microsoft Teams web app or mobile version, both of which are unaffected by the desktop loading issue. These alternatives provide a way for employees to maintain communication until a fix is implemented.

Ongoing Investigation and User Engagement

In a recent update, Microsoft disclosed that ongoing analysis of service logs and telemetry data has not yet yielded conclusive results. To advance the investigation, the company is reaching out to some impacted users for client-side logs, which could help pinpoint the cause and inform future remediation strategies.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of technical issues Microsoft has faced with Teams. Earlier in the year, a regression in the build-caching system resulted in similar launch failures, which were resolved by reverting a faulty service update.

Future Outlook and Recommendations

IT administrators managing Windows systems are advised to keep track of updates via the Microsoft 365 admin center’s service health dashboard. They should also inform users about available workarounds to ensure minimal disruption in daily operations.

Although Microsoft has not provided an estimated timeline for resolution, the collection of client logs suggests a focused, evidence-based approach to solving the issue. This indicates that a thorough investigation is underway, rather than a quick patch deployment.
