Microsoft Automates Windows 11 25H2 Upgrade Rollout

Microsoft Automates Windows 11 25H2 Upgrade Rollout

Posted on April 3, 2026 By CWS

Microsoft has initiated the automatic upgrade of unmanaged Windows 11 devices from version 24H2 to version 25H2. This transition marks the culmination of a phased rollout strategy that utilizes machine learning to assess device readiness.

Rollout Details for Unmanaged Devices

The transition, highlighted in the updated Windows Release Health Dashboard, affects all Home and Pro edition devices that are not managed by IT departments. Starting this week, Microsoft has broadened its machine learning-based rollout to include all eligible unmanaged Windows 11 devices running version 24H2.

These devices will be upgraded to Windows 11 version 25H2, also known as the Windows 11 2025 Update, automatically and without any required input from users. The primary motivation for this upgrade is lifecycle support, as the current version 24H2 will reach its end of support on October 13, 2026.

Technical Aspects of the Upgrade

The upgrade process is streamlined due to the shared core operating system between Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, which includes identical system files. The upgrade is applied through a lightweight “enablement package,” a minor update that activates the latent 25H2 features already included in recent cumulative updates for version 24H2.

This method significantly reduces downtime, requiring only a single restart to finalize the upgrade. The enablement package is quietly downloaded by Windows Update, and users can manage their restart timing or delay the update for a limited time using Windows Update’s active hours and pause features.

Implications for IT and Users

This mandatory upgrade is exclusive to unmanaged devices receiving updates directly from Windows Update or WSUS and not subject to enterprise IT policies. Devices managed through tools like Microsoft Endpoint Manager, Intune, or Windows Autopatch remain under administrator control and are excluded from the automatic upgrade.

Previous rollout phases included earlier Windows 11 versions such as 23H2, 22H2, and 21H1, which have reached end-of-life status. The inclusion of 24H2 in this phase indicates Microsoft’s comprehensive effort to ensure all supported consumer devices are up-to-date.

To verify upgrade readiness, users can navigate to Settings > Windows Update and select “Check for updates.” If eligible, the option to “Download and install Windows 11, version 25H2” will be available. Although users can delay the upgrade, those concerned with security are encouraged to proceed with the update to secure the latest protections and system integrity.
