OpenCode API Key Exposure in Security Breach

OpenCode API Key Exposure in Security Breach

Posted on October 18, 2026 By CWS

OpenCode has recently revealed a security breach that has affected 1.4% of its Console users, resulting in the potential exposure of third-party API keys linked to these accounts. The company announced the incident on October 17, attributing it to a significant distillation attack. OpenCode is currently collaborating with Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google to mitigate the issue.

Affected Users and Immediate Actions

The breach impacts a specific group of Console users who had integrated services from external providers. OpenCode has proactively reached out to the individuals affected via email to ensure prompt awareness, while users not receiving this notification are believed to be unaffected. The disclosed percentage applies solely to Console users, not the entire OpenCode clientele.

Users are being advised to revoke and replace compromised API keys through the respective provider dashboards. Additionally, users should update any applications reliant on these keys and monitor recent usage for any unusual activity. Although the notification highlights potential exposure, it stops short of confirming theft or misuse of the keys.

Legacy System Vulnerability

Insights from the notification reveal that unauthorized access was detected in a legacy system that OpenCode was in the process of decommissioning. This system stored third-party provider keys, including those for OpenAI and Anthropic, which might have been exposed during the breach.

The public statement from OpenCode does not detail the methods used by attackers to gain access, the duration of their presence, or the specific number of keys involved. Moreover, it refrains from identifying the attackers or providing technical evidence related to the distillation activities reported.

Understanding Distillation Attacks

Distillation attacks involve training one AI model with responses generated by another, allowing unauthorized data collection. Cybersecurity News has previously covered Anthropic’s concerns about these attacks, highlighting how repeated queries can facilitate capability transfers between AI models.

Despite OpenCode’s acknowledgment of a connection between the breach and distillation activities, the company has yet to confirm whether exposed credentials were used in such requests. The absence of a confirmed loss figure further complicates the incident’s assessment.

Steps Forward and User Recommendations

Users who have been notified should prioritize the replacement of compromised API keys. Reviewing recent provider usage alongside billing records is crucial to identifying any suspicious requests that may warrant further investigation. Updating all dependent applications is also necessary following key replacement.

OpenCode has acknowledged that the investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and additional technical details may be released in a future report. Such information would be crucial for understanding the breach’s entry point, the extent of credential exposure, and whether unauthorized model requests were made.

As the situation develops, users and the wider tech community await further updates from OpenCode to determine the full scope and implications of this security breach.
