Cyberattack Exposes Data of Over 1 Million in Arizona Courts

Cyberattack Exposes Data of Over 1 Million in Arizona Courts

Posted on October 7, 2026 By CWS

A significant data breach has occurred within Arizona’s judicial system, where personal information belonging to over a million individuals has been compromised. The breach is believed to have been initiated when a court employee inadvertently clicked on a malicious link in an email.

Extent of the Data Breach

The Arizona Supreme Court disclosed that the personal details of approximately 1.3 million individuals, with unresolved court fees, fines, and restitution payments related to traffic and criminal cases spanning up to 30 years, have been illicitly copied. The attackers also accessed nearly 30,000 active and inactive protection orders, along with 150,000 reports from a foster care board tasked with evaluating parental fitness.

The breach highlights the vulnerability of sensitive information stored within the court’s databases, raising concerns about data security and the potential misuse of such information.

Response and Investigation

In response to the cyberattack, the court’s technical team promptly intervened, terminating the intrusion on a backup server within two hours of its detection on September 24. Affected individuals have since been notified regarding the breach.

Alberto Rodriguez, spokesperson for the Arizona Supreme Court, stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest the stolen data has been used or disseminated post-attack. The incident remains under investigation, and officials confirm that no court proceedings have been disrupted as a result.

Impact and Future Implications

Fortunately, the cyberattack did not result in the alteration or deletion of records, nor did it compromise the data of jurors, witnesses, or court employees. This incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures within judicial systems to protect sensitive data from potential threats.

As authorities continue their investigation, this breach serves as a crucial reminder for organizations to enhance their cybersecurity protocols and employee training to mitigate similar risks in the future.
