Binance Hack: Details Emerge on Billion Heist

Binance Hack: Details Emerge on $6 Billion Heist

Posted on November 4, 2026 By CWS

Last week, cryptocurrency exchange Binance revealed that hackers orchestrated a $6.34 billion theft by infiltrating its wallet signing systems. The attack, which lasted several months, involved breaching the computers of three engineers, including one through a fake job interview.

Incident Overview

On November 3, Binance released an initial report on the incident, noting that $2.85 billion of the stolen funds had been frozen or recovered. The exchange apologized for the disruption and uncertainty caused to users and the broader cryptocurrency industry.

The FBI attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean state-sponsored hacking group. Binance explained that the attack was not a simple breach but involved multiple stages, including fake recruiting, malicious downloads, and compromised employee computers.

Methodology of the Attack

The attack began in June when a DevOps engineer downloaded a tampered Homebrew installation while searching for an AI coding tool. Although Binance’s security team replaced his device and reset credentials, the attackers had already gained insights into the engineer’s work and contacts.

In September, another engineer was targeted by a fake project director, leading to interviews with non-existent company representatives. During these interactions, malicious software disguised as a coding assignment was installed, compromising the engineer’s system.

By October 20, the attackers had gained control over multiple systems, leveraging an internal AI tool. On October 29, they executed the heist by accessing a wallet signing service, enabling unauthorized transfers of various cryptocurrencies, including XRP and BTC.

Response and Future Measures

Binance has taken steps to address the breach, including rebuilding the affected systems, replacing devices, and retiring compromised credentials. The company is engaging independent security firms for a thorough review and plans to launch a research fund focused on AI security in blockchain environments.

Despite the efforts, North Korea has denied any involvement, labeling the FBI’s accusations as political provocations. Meanwhile, Binance has resumed withdrawals after verifying its reserves and replenishing 98% of the impacted tokens.

On the laundering front, analytics firms reported that the stolen funds were moved through thousands of wallets across multiple blockchains. However, an unrelated issue on THORChain temporarily slowed down the laundering process.

Conclusion

This significant breach highlights the ongoing challenges in securing cryptocurrency exchanges against sophisticated cyber threats. Binance’s response, including independent audits and enhanced security measures, aims to prevent similar incidents in the future.
