Preparing for Future Cyber Threats with Resilience

Preparing for Future Cyber Threats with Resilience

Posted on September 29, 2026 By CWS

The landscape of cyber threats is evolving, with attackers becoming increasingly persistent and automated. Organizations must now prioritize resilience as an ever-changing operational goal to stay ahead of these risks.

AI-Driven Cyber Threats

Artificial intelligence is a double-edged sword in cybersecurity, empowering both attackers and defenders. AI is enhancing the speed of cyberattacks by automating reconnaissance and vulnerability scanning, reducing the time from detection to exploitation. Phishing attempts are becoming more sophisticated, while AI-generated voice and video deepfakes are harder to discern from genuine content. In a notable incident in May 2026, scammers used deepfakes to impersonate Singapore’s prime minister in a Zoom meeting, swindling SGD 4.9 million.

To counter AI-driven attacks, organizations should evaluate existing security measures and eliminate those that cannot compete with AI-enhanced threats. Implementing AI-based detection systems that identify anomalies early is crucial. Strengthening incident management processes is also essential, as some breaches are inevitable.

Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

Organizations rely heavily on a network of vendors and partners, making them susceptible to breaches within these third parties. Attackers exploit backdoors in vendor software and unmanaged APIs, which can lead to widespread operational disruptions. A cyberattack on Australian manufacturer Mackay Sugar demonstrated this risk, causing significant operational halts.

Enhancing oversight of vendors and supply chains involves moving away from passive relationships towards proactive monitoring. Establishing a vendor ranking system based on data sensitivity and enforcing stringent security contracts are vital steps to mitigate these risks.

Preparing for Quantum Computing

Quantum computing poses a future threat to current encryption standards, such as RSA and ECC. Although this technology is not yet mainstream, the risk of Harvest Now, Decrypt Later (HNDL) necessitates proactive measures. Migrating to post-quantum cryptography is a lengthy process that organizations, especially those handling long-lived data, should begin now.

To prepare, businesses need to map their encryption usage and create a detailed roadmap for transitioning to quantum-resistant systems. This foresight will protect sensitive information from future quantum threats.

Geopolitical Cyber Risks

Nation-states and associated actors increasingly target critical infrastructure sectors like energy and finance. In 2026, Iran-affiliated hackers attacked U.S. infrastructure, causing tangible damage. Additionally, disinformation and deepfake campaigns linked to geopolitical tensions present ongoing challenges.

Viewing cyber risks from a broader business and national security perspective is essential. Regular crisis simulations, improved threat intelligence, and collaboration with external agencies are key strategies. Organizations should maintain a hard copy of response plans to guide actions during system outages.

Conclusion: Building a Resilient Cybersecurity Framework

Recognizing these emerging threats is only part of the solution; the real challenge lies in effectively responding to them. Developing a robust cybersecurity framework requires ongoing efforts across technology, governance, and personnel. While complete immunity from cyberattacks is unattainable, resilience equips organizations to manage threats effectively when they occur.
