NightmareStresser, a notorious distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) rental platform, has been dismantled through a concerted international operation. The US Department of Justice recently revealed that the FBI has effectively seized the domains hosting this illicit service.
US Authorities Seize DDoS Domains
The FBI’s intervention has resulted in the seizure of nightmare-stresser[.]com and nightmarestresser[.]org. These domains now display an official notice of seizure. Authorities have tracked the service’s operations back to at least 2022, marking it as a significant player in the DDoS attack landscape.
Security analyst Alex Carter, however, suggests that the service likely originated in 2016 and gained traction in 2018. Following the disruption of competing platforms, NightmareStresser rose to prominence in 2019 as a leading DDoS tool.
NightmareStresser’s Global Impact
The service reportedly amassed nearly one million users by 2025, capable of executing between 3,000 to 4,000 attacks hourly. Despite accepting cryptocurrency payments, it deliberately avoided targeting government, educational, and healthcare institutions.
This takedown forms part of the wider Operation PowerOFF, a global initiative targeting DDoS-for-hire networks. These services, also known as booters or stressers, have lowered the barrier for entry into cybercrime, drawing attention from international law enforcement.
Broader Cybersecurity Efforts
Over the past eight years, US authorities have charged 12 individuals involved in facilitating DDoS attacks and have seized over 100 domains linked to these illegal services. In a recent coordinated effort, law enforcement from 21 nations disrupted 53 additional domains connected to DDoS-for-hire enterprises.
Concurrently, the US disrupted the RapperBot DDoS botnet and took action against 27 booter service websites in 2024. Authorities continue to pursue and prosecute both operators and users of these malicious platforms.
This international collaboration underscores the ongoing commitment to dismantling cybercriminal infrastructures and holding accountable those responsible for proliferating these threats. As global cybersecurity efforts intensify, further operations are anticipated to combat such illegal activities.
