Google Accelerates Chrome Releases to Bi-Weekly Schedule

Google Accelerates Chrome Releases to Bi-Weekly Schedule

Posted on March 4, 2026 By CWS

Google has unveiled plans to accelerate its Chrome browser release schedule to every two weeks, a change from its previous four-week cycle. This new approach, announced on Tuesday, aims to enhance the delivery of performance improvements, fixes, and new features to users and developers promptly.

Background on Chrome Release Schedule

Since 2021, Google has been issuing major Chrome updates every four weeks, complemented by weekly security patches initiated in 2023. This strategy was designed to minimize patch delays and improve software quality. The tech giant now seeks to further refine this process with a bi-weekly release schedule set to commence in September.

With each major update, Chrome incorporates important security patches. The upcoming accelerated release schedule is expected to bolster user security and improve overall browser stability. Google assures that despite the frequency of updates increasing, the reduced scope of each release will lessen disruptions and facilitate easier post-release troubleshooting.

Implications for Chrome Release Process

Beginning with Chrome version 153, set for release on September 8, beta updates will also adopt the two-week cycle. This adjustment will be implemented across all major platforms, including desktop, Android, and iOS. However, it will not impact the Dev and Canary release channels.

Google’s Extended Stable releases will maintain their eight-week cycle, ensuring that extended release options remain available, particularly for Chromebook users. The company emphasizes that the latest updates will be thoroughly tested on Chromebooks to ensure a seamless user experience.

Future Outlook and Expectations

Google is committed to adapting its release channels to the new schedule and will provide further details on milestone updates for managed devices. This shift reflects Google’s dedication to maintaining high standards of stability and performance while keeping pace with the fast-evolving web landscape.

As the tech industry continues to evolve, Google’s decision to expedite Chrome’s release cycle underscores its focus on delivering timely enhancements and safeguarding user security. Users can expect more frequent updates with improved capabilities, contributing to a more secure and efficient browsing experience.
