Google Strengthens Chrome with New Scam Protections

Google Strengthens Chrome with New Scam Protections

Posted on October 21, 2026 By CWS

Google has unveiled a suite of new security measures for its Chrome browser, aimed at mitigating scams and social engineering attacks. These enhancements include improved site warnings, advanced server-side Gemini analysis, and a new system to detect and prevent ClickFix command attacks.

Enhanced Protection for Safer Browsing

Part of Chrome’s Enhanced Protection feature, launched in 2020, the new security tools aim to provide a safer browsing experience. According to Google, users who enable Enhanced Protection are ten times less likely to fall victim to phishing, social engineering, and other malicious online activities compared to those using Standard Protection. This claim is based on the frequency of safety warnings each group receives.

The upgraded Safe Browsing feature now categorizes site warnings into two levels, similar to the approach used for file downloads. A high-confidence threat triggers a full-page red warning, while lower-confidence threats are flagged as ‘suspicious sites’, allowing Google to display more warnings without overwhelming users.

Gemini Analysis Moves to Google Servers

Gemini, Google’s scam detection tool, has transitioned from an on-device feature to a server-side model, expanding its capabilities to all users with Enhanced Protection. This model evaluates various signals, including brand presence and the purpose of a page, to assess the likelihood of a scam.

The new system analyzes page content only when it appears strongly indicative of a scam, ensuring user data is handled securely and not retained. Safe Browsing combines Gemini’s findings with other security indicators to determine the safety of a webpage.

Addressing ClickFix Attacks and HTTP Connections

Chrome now includes measures to combat ClickFix attacks, where users are tricked into executing harmful commands. The browser detects when a user copies a potentially malicious script and submits it for further analysis, issuing a warning if it is deemed dangerous.

Additionally, Chrome has implemented a prompt requiring user approval before connecting to unencrypted HTTP sites, enhancing user awareness of potential security risks. This feature was initially available to Enhanced Protection users but is now active for all by default. Sites unable to secure an HTTPS certificate, such as local IP addresses, are exempt from these warnings.

Google reports that most desktop Chrome users encounter no HTTP warnings weekly, with fewer than 1% seeing multiple alerts. The company hopes its proactive security measures will set a precedent for other browsers to follow.

These updates further solidify Chrome’s position as a security-focused browser, continually evolving to protect users from emerging online threats.
