Hackers Agree to Erase Data Stolen From Canvas Platform

Hackers Agree to Erase Data Stolen From Canvas Platform

Posted on May 12, 2026 By CWS

The Canvas educational platform, operated by Instructure, has successfully negotiated with hackers to delete data stolen during a recent cyberattack. This breach, which impacted numerous students in the midst of their final exams, was resolved through an undisclosed agreement.

Instructure’s Response to the Cyber Attack

Instructure announced the arrangement in a statement but refrained from sharing specifics about the deal, including any potential payment involved. The identity of the hackers remains undisclosed as the company continues to fortify its systems. Following the breach, Canvas was temporarily taken offline, disrupting access for students and faculty.

The cybercriminal group ShinyHunters took responsibility for the attack, threatening to release sensitive data from nearly 9,000 schools and 275 million individuals unless a ransom was paid by May 6. As negotiations ensued, the deadline was extended, indicating some institutions were engaging with the group.

Data Recovery and Security Measures

In a positive turn, the stolen data was returned to Instructure, accompanied by digital proof that the hackers had destroyed all remaining copies, as evidenced by “shred logs.” Despite these assurances, the company acknowledged the inherent uncertainty in dealing with cybercriminals.

Instructure emphasized the importance of taking every possible step to protect its customers’ peace of mind. Chief Information Security Officer Steve Proud confirmed that the breach involved student ID numbers, email addresses, names, and messages. However, there was no evidence of compromised passwords, birthdates, government IDs, or financial information.

Long-term Implications and System Enhancements

Instructure is collaborating with expert vendors to conduct a thorough forensic analysis and bolster its digital defenses. This comprehensive review aims to prevent future breaches and ensure the integrity of the data involved.

The attack caused significant disruption, leaving students and educators unable to access vital educational resources. Canvas serves as a multifaceted platform for managing grades, accessing course materials, and facilitating communication between students and instructors.

As educational institutions rely heavily on Canvas for digital lectures and assignments, the platform’s security remains a top priority. Efforts are underway to restore confidence and ensure the platform’s resilience against such threats in the future.
