Mastodon Faces Major DDoS Attack Following Bluesky Incident

Mastodon Faces Major DDoS Attack Following Bluesky Incident

Posted on April 22, 2026 By CWS

A major distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack recently targeted Mastodon, a decentralized social media platform, mirroring an earlier assault on Bluesky. The attack specifically hit Mastodon.social, its main server, leading to significant service disruptions.

Mastodon’s Response to the DDoS Attack

The incident began on April 20 at 1 PM, significantly affecting Mastodon.social. However, by 4 PM, measures were implemented to mitigate the attack, restoring access to the platform. A status update on April 21 at 11 AM confirmed that operations were back to normal as the attack had ceased.

This cyber assault came on the heels of a similar attack on Bluesky, indicating a potential pattern targeting decentralized platforms. Both platforms have gained traction as alternatives to traditional social networks like X, formerly known as Twitter, especially since its acquisition by Elon Musk.

Unconfirmed Claims of Responsibility

The hacktivist group 313 Team, which claims to support pro-Iran interests, has taken responsibility for the attack on Bluesky, though their claims remain unverified. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the Mastodon attack, leaving the true perpetrators unknown.

The rise in popularity of decentralized platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky suggests they are becoming appealing targets for cyber threats, which underscores the importance of robust security measures in the ever-evolving landscape of social media.

Decentralized Networks Under Threat

Mastodon and Bluesky have seen a surge in users seeking alternatives to centralized networks, driven by concerns over control, algorithms, and moderation practices. These platforms offer users more autonomy, but also face unique security challenges, as demonstrated by these recent DDoS incidents.

As decentralized social media continues to grow in popularity, these platforms must bolster their defenses against cyber threats to ensure user safety and platform reliability. The ongoing threat landscape underscores the need for continuous vigilance and proactive security strategies.

In light of these events, the future of decentralized social media hinges on its ability to withstand and adapt to such aggressive cyber threats, ensuring a safe haven for users seeking alternatives to mainstream social media giants.
