Personal Risk Management Lessons for Security Leaders

Personal Risk Management Lessons for Security Leaders

Posted on October 29, 2026 By CWS

Risk management leaders often focus on evaluating exposure, challenging assumptions, and suggesting the best ways to prepare for potential incidents. They understand that the absence of alerts does not equate to safety; rather, resilience stems from thorough preparation and the ability to execute plans effectively.

However, when risk becomes a personal matter, these principles gain additional significance and complexity.

Personal Experience with a Health Diagnosis

Following a routine medical check-up that included a PSA blood test, I received an unexpected diagnosis of stage-three prostate cancer. This development came as a surprise, given the lack of symptoms and family history, highlighting the unpredictable nature of personal risk.

While my story is not about making health choices or offering clinical guidance, it serves as a valuable framework for a field that emphasizes preparedness, leadership, and resilience, sometimes overlooking the human element involved in delivering these qualities.

Adjusting Risk Tolerance in Personal Contexts

In their professional roles, leaders are adept at maintaining objectivity. They assess security measures, determine acceptable risk levels, and justify difficult decisions to stakeholders. Typically, these analyses are conducted from an organizational viewpoint.

Risk management involves decision-making under pressure, often with incomplete data. Leaders who neglect the human aspect may find themselves less prepared when personal or team pressures escalate. A parallel can be drawn with cybersecurity governance, where agency is derived from information, psychological safety, and open communication.

Resilience as a Product of Preparation

Before commencing radiotherapy, I dedicated myself to preparation, focusing on physical fitness, diet, rest, and mental conditioning. This proactive approach included reassessing my relationship with substances like alcohol and caffeine, treating the treatment process as a structured challenge.

This experience underscores a broader leadership lesson: resilience is fostered through clear routines, achievable goals, supportive relationships, and the flexibility to adapt plans as needed. Overextending oneself is counterproductive, whether in personal health or cybersecurity roles.

The Role of Transparency in Leadership

Choosing to publicly share my cancer diagnosis aimed to destigmatize the condition. While reactions varied, the underlying message resonated with the need for openness, a quality often sought in security environments.

Organizations may inadvertently stifle the transparency they value by demanding unwavering confidence from leaders. True strength lies in acknowledging vulnerabilities and fostering an environment where individuals feel safe to express their needs.

Fostering a Human-Centric Risk Management Model

Although personal health and cybersecurity are distinct domains, the lessons from one can inform the other. Emphasizing curiosity, preparation, expert advice, and adaptive recovery aids organizations and individuals in navigating uncertainties.

For risk management professionals, the challenge is to become more attuned to subtle signals, support open communication, and ensure individuals are genuinely supported. Encouraging dialogue about health risks, like prostate health, is crucial for fostering a supportive and informed community.

In conclusion, the integration of personal experiences into risk management enhances the ability of leaders to create environments where individuals can discuss risks openly, seek assistance when needed, and recover without compromising their dignity.
