Apple Tightens macOS Disk Access to Protect Against AI Risks

Apple Tightens macOS Disk Access to Protect Against AI Risks

Posted on October 5, 2026 By CWS

Apple is set to enhance the security measures surrounding macOS’s Full Disk Access (FDA) feature, aiming to mitigate potential security threats posed by artificial intelligence (AI) agents. This move addresses concerns about unauthorized data exposure on users’ systems.

Understanding Full Disk Access

Introduced with macOS Mojave, Full Disk Access allows applications to bypass standard security protocols to access system files. This access is crucial for certain software like security tools and backup applications that require deep system interaction. However, developers’ use of this feature has raised concerns about user privacy and data protection.

Apple noted that Full Disk Access has been utilized in ways that might jeopardize user privacy, potentially exposing sensitive information such as files, emails, messages, and browsing history without the user’s explicit consent.

AI Risks and User Privacy

With the growing capabilities of AI agents, Apple emphasized the importance of ensuring that users are fully aware of the risks associated with granting such extensive access. The company plans to introduce updates to make sure that access is only granted with explicit user consent, although the exact timeline for these changes remains unspecified.

Apple’s announcement follows reports about Meta’s Muse tool, which accessed private iMessages after being granted Full Disk Access. Muse, a personal AI agent, requires both Full Disk Access and a Messages connector setting to read user messages, as clarified by Meta’s CTO David Singleton.

Security Vulnerabilities and Implications

Recent demonstrations by security researchers, including Patrick Wardle, have highlighted vulnerabilities in AI tools like Muse. A proof-of-concept exploit, now patched, showed how unauthorized access to Muse could allow malicious actors to misuse its privileged position to capture sensitive data.

Additionally, Wardle reported another vulnerability in OpenAI’s ChatGPT app for Mac, which could have provided unauthorized access to chat logs and other stored data. These incidents underscore the potential risks associated with the extensive data access enjoyed by AI tools.

The broader implications of these findings highlight the need for stringent security measures to protect user privacy and prevent malicious exploitation of AI agents’ capabilities. Apple’s upcoming changes to Full Disk Access controls are a step towards safeguarding user data against these evolving threats.
