The rise of AI-driven applications has introduced new security vulnerabilities, as employees leverage AI to create full-fledged applications integrated into production systems without IT or security oversight. This evolution from simple AI interactions to complex applications has expanded the risk landscape significantly.

Understanding the New Age of Shadow AI

A recent report titled ‘The Shadow Builders,’ covered by major outlets such as Axios and WIRED, highlights the scale of this issue. An investigation by Red Access found over 380,000 web assets made with leading AI platforms, with more than 2,000 containing sensitive corporate data openly accessible on the internet. These applications, often lacking basic security measures, span various industries across six continents.

Unlike traditional Shadow IT, where unsanctioned SaaS tools were used, these AI-developed applications are custom-built and openly published, often bypassing existing security protocols. This shift challenges traditional IT governance, as these applications are directly tied to production systems without the usual oversight.

The Limitations of Current Security Infrastructures

Security tools designed for traditional IT environments struggle to address these new threats. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools, Data Loss Prevention (DLP) systems, and Cloud Access Security Brokers (CASB) are not equipped to identify or control these custom applications. They fail to detect the nuanced activities of AI-driven application development, especially when conducted on unmanaged devices or personal networks.

Current security measures focus on managing known threats and applications within controlled environments. However, AI-developed applications blur these boundaries, making it difficult for existing tools to provide adequate protection. This gap leaves organizations vulnerable to data breaches and exposes sensitive information to unauthorized access.

Strategies for Improving Security Posture

To effectively manage these risks, organizations must adopt a proactive approach. Begin by engaging employees to document their AI-driven projects, focusing on understanding the applications’ connections to corporate systems and their public accessibility. Establish clear guidelines for acceptable platforms and data handling practices to encourage transparency and compliance among employees.

Ongoing discovery and monitoring are crucial as these applications continue to evolve. Implementing a session-layer security solution can provide comprehensive visibility into application activities, regardless of the device or network used. This approach enables effective governance and mitigates risks associated with this new category of Shadow IT.

As AI platforms and applications continue to develop, organizations must remain vigilant and adaptable, ensuring their security infrastructures evolve in tandem.
