U.S. Cracks Down on North Korean IT Scam, Charges 14

U.S. Cracks Down on North Korean IT Scam, Charges 14

Posted on October 14, 2026 By CWS

The United States Department of Justice took significant action on Tuesday, charging 14 individuals and confiscating 187 computers in an ongoing effort to dismantle a widespread fraudulent IT worker scheme linked to North Korea. The operation targeted a network of remote IT workers posing as legitimate employees, affecting over 70 U.S. companies.

The indictment reveals charges against both U.S. citizens and Chinese nationals for their roles in the conspiracy, which centers on wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft. Two U.S. nationals, Michael James Bostelle and Juan Cecilio Pena Carrillo, have been arrested, while other suspects remain at large.

Details of the Fraudulent Scheme

Key figures in the scheme include Trey Michael Nolte, who allegedly operated a shell company named Dark Falls LLC. This company purported to offer software development services but was instead a front for illicit activities. The scheme facilitated North Korean IT workers securing positions in U.S. firms under false identities, funneling salaries back to North Korea.

The operation dismantled over 40 so-called laptop farms in Texas, which were used to support the fraudulent employment arrangement. This move is part of a broader U.S. initiative to cut off revenue streams funding North Korea’s military ambitions.

Impacts on U.S. Companies

The fraudulent activities have significantly impacted various sectors, including health care, communications, and manufacturing. Victim companies spanned across the United States, from Ohio to California, showing the widespread reach of the scheme. This operation generated approximately $3 million in illicit revenue used to support prohibited programs in North Korea.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has been instrumental in tracking the operation, uncovering the techniques employed by these operatives. These include fraudulent police reports to redirect company equipment and the use of residential addresses to obscure the final destination of devices.

Continuing Threat and Response

The FBI has issued a warning about the evolving nature of such schemes, noting the increased use of facilitators and subcontractors from regions like South Asia and West Africa. These third-party freelancers assist in applying for jobs and even conduct interviews on behalf of the North Korean operatives.

As the threat actors adapt, the FBI emphasizes their continued efforts to counter these illicit networks. The use of false identities and threats of violence to coerce cooperation underscores the sophistication and danger of the scheme. The U.S. government remains committed to disrupting these operations, though challenges persist in fully dismantling the threat.

This crackdown is a crucial step in safeguarding U.S. economic interests and national security. However, the ongoing adaptability of these threat actors highlights the need for vigilant cybersecurity measures and international cooperation to address such global threats.
