Google Enhances Chrome with AI to Block Scam Alerts

Posted on October 21, 2026 By CWS

Google’s Latest AI-Powered Chrome Update

Google has significantly enhanced Chrome’s security by incorporating a robust AI model named Gemini, aimed at recognizing deceptive schemes such as counterfeit antivirus notifications and fraudulent browser update prompts. This development, revealed on October 20, 2026, also introduces alerts for suspicious sites and guards against ClickFix scams that deceive users into executing harmful commands.

The update represents an expansion of Google’s previous AI-driven scam detection efforts. Initially, Chrome employed an on-device Gemini model to spot tech support scams on certain devices. The analysis has now shifted to a server-side model, broadening the feature’s availability to all users with Enhanced Protection activated, independent of hardware compatibility.

Gemini’s Role in Scam Detection

As explained in Google’s announcement, Gemini scrutinizes web page content for fraudulent indicators. It evaluates the purported brand identity, the web page’s intent, and assigns a likelihood score of being a scam. Safe Browsing then combines these insights with domain reputation and other security signals to make a final judgment, ensuring that Gemini’s analysis alone doesn’t block websites.

The addition of suspicious site warnings in Chrome offers an extra layer of security. It aids in identifying pages that mimic security alerts or browser branding to coerce users into making unsafe decisions. Google ensures that page text is analyzed only when there’s a strong indication of scam activity, and the company maintains strict privacy controls by not storing or utilizing this data for model training.

New Protection Levels Against Online Threats

Chrome’s Enhanced Protection now features two tiers of site warnings. Alerts for suspicious sites indicate deceptive patterns when the perceived threat level is lower. These warnings differ in visual elements from those for confirmed malicious sites, which still trigger the recognizable full-page red warning.

The update also tackles the issue of ClickFix scams, which involve instructing users to copy and execute commands to fix non-existent problems. Such scams often circumvent Chrome’s typical download checks by using PowerShell or cmd.exe. Chrome now detects suspicious command copying during potential ClickFix scenarios, stripping identifiable information before Safe Browsing analysis. Dangerous commands prompt a warning while minimizing disruptions for legitimate developers.

To benefit from these protective features, users need to enable Enhanced Protection. Google’s Chrome Safe Browsing guide provides detailed instructions. Importantly, Google emphasizes that Chrome will never request users to execute commands from a webpage to repair the browser.

Maintaining robust defenses against emerging malware threats is critical. Integrating threat intelligence feeds from numerous SOCs enhances protection capabilities.
