FBI Seizes Domain Linked to Cybercrime Hosting

FBI Seizes Domain Linked to Cybercrime Hosting

Posted on October 30, 2026 By CWS

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken control of virtualine.net, a domain previously managed by a bulletproof hosting provider known for supporting cybercriminal activities. This operation marks a significant step in the fight against illegal internet services.

Background on Virtualine’s Operations

Virtualine, which also operated under names like Secury, Massgod, Spamhouse, Lanedo, and Omegatech, played a crucial role in cybercrime by hosting services that evaded law enforcement interventions. This platform catered to clients involved in various illegal activities, such as phishing and spam.

Promotional materials on cybercrime forums highlighted Virtualine’s support for criminal enterprises, offering assurances that they could relocate customer services to infrastructure outside the reach of authorities. Moreover, the company was notorious for turning a blind eye to abuse reports.

Illegal Activities and Law Enforcement Response

The hosting service facilitated the distribution of explicit content and supported entities engaged in hacking-for-hire, targeting personal accounts to steal sensitive material. Despite numerous takedown requests from global law enforcement agencies, Virtualine continued its operations and even aided in setting up new sites for illicit content.

According to blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs, Virtualine was a preferred choice for ransomware groups and operators of information-stealing malware. The platform reportedly received substantial cryptocurrency linked to criminal activities, outperforming other similar services in terms of illicit fund transactions.

Financial Transactions and Implications

Emerging in 2024 on cybercrime forums, Virtualine claimed to have been active since 2019. By 2025, it boasted the largest number of autonomous system numbers for malware and botnet hosting. The majority of payments to its Bitcoin addresses originated from a Russian drug marketplace and a large-scale sextortion scheme.

TRM Labs highlighted that the seizure of Virtualine’s domain disrupts customer access but does not necessarily halt the operator’s activities or fully sever access to their underlying infrastructure. This emphasizes the resilience and adaptability of such networks in the face of legal challenges.

With the FBI’s intervention, there is hope for increased scrutiny and disruption of similar platforms. However, as history has shown, the battle against cybercrime requires ongoing vigilance and international cooperation.
