Critical Cisco Email Gateway Vulnerability Exploited

Critical Cisco Email Gateway Vulnerability Exploited

Posted on October 15, 2026 By CWS

Cisco has issued an urgent warning regarding a critical zero-day vulnerability in its Secure Email Gateway, which attackers are actively exploiting to gain root access to affected systems. Identified as CVE-2026-76519, this flaw boasts a CVSS score of 9.8 and can be exploited through specially designed email attachments, bypassing the need for user authentication.

Active Exploitation and Advisory Details

The issue was officially acknowledged by Cisco on October 14, 2026, after their security team detected active exploitation in the same month. However, the identities of these attackers and the number of compromised devices remain undisclosed, leaving the full scope of the threat uncertain.

Located within the Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) feature, the vulnerability is triggered when the File Reputation service processes certain email attachments. This allows attackers to inject malicious files and execute commands with root-level privileges, bypassing the need for user interaction with the email.

Systems Affected and Previous Vulnerabilities

The flaw impacts both physical and virtual appliances running vulnerable AsyncOS software, provided two conditions are met: File Reputation must be active within a mail policy, and the Content Scanner Tools version must be older than 25.3.0.5525. Notably, the Secure Email and Web Manager along with the Secure Web Appliance are unaffected.

This incident follows a similar vulnerability, CVE-2026-76461, identified in September, and previously documented attacks on Cisco email systems concerning the Spam Quarantine feature.

Mitigation Steps and Security Recommendations

Administrators are advised to check their File Reputation settings under AMP for both incoming and outgoing mail policies. Cisco recommends utilizing the ‘contentscannerstatus’ command to ascertain the installed Content Scanner Tools version.

For investigation, Cisco suggests examining system logs for security-related entries and inspecting each device in a cluster for signs of compromise. Evidence of unauthorized access should prompt immediate incident response actions, while incomplete scans require support from Cisco’s Technical Assistance Center.

Patch Availability and Future Actions

Patching the vulnerability is crucial to prevent further exploitation, but it does not confirm whether systems have previously been compromised. Organizations should investigate any suspicious activity and preserve evidence for a comprehensive investigation.

Cisco has released fixed versions, AsyncOS 15.5.5-014 and 16.5.0-780, urging customers to upgrade. Additionally, Content Scanner Tools version 25.3.0.5525 or later is available, which does not necessitate a complete software upgrade. For those relying on automatic updates, verification of the fixed package’s installation is essential.

Customers using the Secure Email Cloud Gateway have already received the necessary updates and do not need to take further action. For those impacted, updating systems and checking for past compromises should be prioritized.
