Fake Chrome App Bypasses Detection on Google Play

Fake Chrome App Bypasses Detection on Google Play

Posted on October 15, 2026 By CWS

Concerns about app security have emerged as a fake Google Chrome app on Google Play reportedly achieved over 100,000 downloads. This incident has sparked renewed scrutiny over the effectiveness of app screening processes and the reliability of paid search results.

Deceptive Practices on Google Play

The fraudulent app skillfully imitated Chrome’s name, icon, and description, misleading users into believing it was the legitimate browser. Distributed by Hizbartech instead of Google LLC, the app was found to be promoted above the real Chrome browser as a sponsored listing.

Despite the impressive download figure displayed, there is no concrete evidence that an equal number of users actually installed the fake app. Additionally, there is no verified information suggesting the app engaged in password theft or contained a banking Trojan.

Tracing the Origins and Identity Shift

Investigations by PiunikaWeb revealed the app’s origins could be traced back to a game called Ball Bounce, which rebranded itself in late September. Reports from Android Authority and other sources noted changes in the app’s identity over time, although the exact launch date remains uncertain.

This identity shift from a simple game to a trusted browser appearance underscores the challenge of maintaining app integrity on platforms like Google Play. Such transformations have been observed in other cases, but they do not necessarily indicate the presence of malicious components in this instance.

Security Implications and Recommendations

The app’s package identifier, com.ballbounce.Hizbartech, served as a crucial link between the game and its deceptive Chrome identity, offering a starting point for further investigation. Users who downloaded the app reported it featured a contact-style interface with AI avatars, deviating significantly from a traditional browser experience.

Security experts emphasize the importance of verifying app developers, especially for widely used applications like Chrome. Users are advised to ensure that the official Chrome app is published by Google LLC and carries the package name com.android.chrome.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

While the app has reportedly been removed from Google Play, discrepancies in download figures and store listings highlight ongoing challenges in app store management. Users who installed the Hizbartech app should delete it and run Google Play Protect to safeguard their devices.

The incident serves as a reminder of the ever-present threat of app impersonation and the need for continuous vigilance and updated defense measures. By prioritizing developer verification and using trusted security tools, users can better protect themselves from potential threats.
