Google Boosts Android AI to Combat Scam Calls and Phishing

Google Boosts Android AI to Combat Scam Calls and Phishing

Posted on October 19, 2026 By CWS

Google is rolling out enhanced security measures for Android users, aiming to thwart mobile scams involving calls, text messages, chat applications, and web links. This initiative comes as fraudulent activities become increasingly sophisticated, employing tactics such as spoofed numbers and AI-generated voices to deceive users.

Advanced AI Tools for Scam Detection

Currently, Google’s AI-powered systems in Phone by Google and Google Messages identify over five million suspected scam calls and texts each month. The new set of protections extends beyond blocking known threats, aiming to prevent users from engaging with scams at a critical stage. By using a combination of on-device AI, cloud-based analysis, and real-time monitoring, Android seeks to identify suspicious activities before users disclose sensitive information.

A notable feature in this update is the opt-in Enhanced Protection mode in Google Messages, set to release soon. This mode offers robust defenses against complex messaging scams by leveraging Google’s Private AI Compute platform for in-depth conversation analysis with unknown senders.

Innovations in Scam and Link Detection

Google’s focus includes detecting slow-building social engineering scams, where attackers build trust over time before initiating fraudulent requests. These analyses are conducted in a secure, encrypted environment inaccessible to Google staff. Enhanced Protection also strengthens link verification in Google Messages, addressing the challenge of newly created phishing domains that evade traditional URL filters.

The Gemini Nano AI model integrates real-time web signals with local data to evaluate unfamiliar links before users access them. Android will also introduce redesigned warnings for links from unsaved numbers, offering an additional layer of caution before users visit potential phishing sites.

Comprehensive Security Enhancements

Google is expanding scam alerts from Pixel devices to more Android users, allowing chat notifications to flag suspicious messages directly. Collaborations with Android manufacturers aim to provide these on-device features to millions more users by year’s end. Additionally, proactive measures are being implemented to combat screen-sharing scams and OTP theft.

New protections automatically hide sensitive fields during screen-sharing sessions in Chrome and Android WebView. Android will also block unauthorized call forwarding and provide user alerts when MMI forwarding codes are manually entered. These enhancements target phone-based social engineering tactics that trick users into sharing their screens or redirecting calls.

To further safeguard users, Google is partnering with banks like Banco do Brasil and Itaú Unibanco to verify financial calls. This feature has already prevented over three million spoofed calls, showcasing Google’s commitment to advancing mobile security from basic spam filtering to comprehensive fraud prevention strategies. Users are advised to remain vigilant and regularly update their security defenses.
