Google Patches 52 Chrome Security Issues, Including Critical Flaws

Google Patches 52 Chrome Security Issues, Including Critical Flaws

Posted on October 28, 2026 By CWS

Google has rolled out an important update for its Chrome browser, addressing 52 security vulnerabilities, with four being identified as critical. This update, which is crucial for user security, targets flaws in components such as FileSystem, FileAPI, Skia, and Layout.

Details of the Chrome Security Update

The recent update advances the Stable channel to version 156.0.8078.73/.74 for both Windows and Mac, while Linux users will receive version 156.0.8078.73. The update will be distributed to users over the forthcoming weeks, focusing on enhancing various browser functionalities like file handling, page rendering, and multimedia processing.

Among the 52 vulnerabilities patched, four are classified as critical, 46 as high severity, and two as medium. The critical issues include CVE-2026-118306, a memory corruption problem in FileSystem, and CVE-2026-118331, a flaw in FileAPI’s input validation, both reported by Xinyang Ge from Anthropic. Additionally, two other critical vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-118348 and CVE-2026-118344, involve input validation and use-after-free flaws in Skia and Layout, respectively.

Impact of the Vulnerabilities

A use-after-free vulnerability occurs when a program continues to use memory after it has been freed, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. Input validation flaws, on the other hand, stem from inadequate checks on data inputs, posing significant security risks.

Despite addressing these high-risk areas, Google has not provided specific details about potential attack methods or confirmed any instances of exploitation. The security bulletin remains focused on the technical aspects of the fixes rather than on any known attacks.

Recommendations for Users and Administrators

To ensure protection, users are advised to check their current Chrome version and update it promptly via the browser’s ‘About Google Chrome’ section. Linux users should proceed with updates through their package managers. Furthermore, administrators are encouraged to maintain automatic updates on managed devices to ensure timely application of these critical patches.

This latest update follows a previous release that addressed 353 security vulnerabilities, underscoring the ongoing need for users to monitor their browser versions closely. Google has acknowledged the contributions of various researchers and organizations, including Anthropic and OpenAI Codex Security, in identifying and reporting these issues.

In conclusion, staying updated with the latest browser versions is vital for maintaining security and protecting against potential vulnerabilities.
