OpenAI Launches Bio Bug Bounty for GPT-5.5 AI Safety

OpenAI has unveiled a new initiative aimed at enhancing the safety mechanisms of its advanced AI systems, specifically through a Bio Bug Bounty program for GPT-5.5. This program seeks to address potential misuse of AI in biological contexts by inviting researchers to test the system’s defenses against universal jailbreaks.

Objective of the Bio Bug Bounty

The core challenge set by OpenAI for participants is to identify a single universal jailbreak prompt that can trick GPT-5.5 into answering all five questions of OpenAI’s bio safety challenge without triggering any moderation warnings. This effort is part of a broader strategy to fortify the AI’s biological safety protocols.

OpenAI specifies that the focus is on GPT-5.5 operating within the Codex Desktop environment. The company promises a significant reward for the first participant to successfully uncover such a universal jailbreak. Additionally, smaller rewards may be given for partial successes depending on the outcomes.

Participation and Timeline

Interested experts can submit their applications starting April 23, 2026, with the program running until June 22, 2026. Testing is set to begin on April 28 and conclude on July 27, 2026. OpenAI is not opening the program to the general public but is instead inviting a selected group of experienced bio red-teamers and evaluating applications from new researchers with relevant expertise.

Applicants must provide their name, affiliation, and experience through a short form. Accepted participants will need to have existing ChatGPT accounts and sign a non-disclosure agreement, ensuring that all findings and communications remain confidential.

Significance for AI and Biosecurity

This program highlights a growing trend in adversarial testing of advanced AI systems. By employing a model akin to traditional bug bounties, OpenAI aims to uncover vulnerabilities in its AI safety protocols before malicious actors can exploit them. The focus on biological safety is particularly crucial, given the potential for powerful AI models to be misused in harmful scientific tasks.

OpenAI’s Bio Bug Bounty initiative is part of a larger framework that includes existing Safety Bug Bounty and Security Bug Bounty programs. This approach underscores the intersection of AI security with biosecurity, red teaming, and advanced prompt-injection research, emphasizing the importance of robust defenses in the development of frontier AI technologies.
