Google Offers $250K for Top Cloud Security Flaws

Posted on November 2, 2026 By CWS

Google has significantly boosted its Cloud Vulnerability Reward Program by introducing a substantial $250,000 reward for discovering critical security vulnerabilities. This top-tier bounty is aimed at recognizing researchers who can demonstrate vulnerabilities leading to full administrative access within Google Cloud environments.

Details of the New Reward Tier

The newly unveiled reward is tailored to honor groundbreaking architectural research. It is specifically targeted at researchers able to gain ‘roles/owner’ privileges or complete Identity and Access Management (IAM) control over arbitrary Google Cloud organizations or projects. To qualify, the exploit path must be independent of any prior access, compromised credentials, or user interactions.

Additionally, reports revealing remote code execution in Borg, Google’s core production infrastructure, are eligible for this reward. The potential risks associated with code execution in Borg, such as service disruptions or data breaches, necessitate immediate cessation of probing upon any execution in Borg, as emphasized by Google Cloud’s Chief Information Security Officer, Chris Betz.

Criteria and Evaluation Process

Google has updated its Cloud VRP guidelines to include criteria for the new root-in-cloud validation. The company will award the bounty if the initial entry point, execution context, and attack surface analysis confirm the possibility of a full takeover of tenants or projects. Identifying such high-risk flaws demands human ingenuity paired with advanced system analytics, as noted by Betz.

Michael Cote, who leads Google’s vulnerability reward program, highlights that first-time researchers using innovative tools are identifying more complex bugs than those found by newcomers in previous years. This new tier demands a profound understanding of architectural structures and the integration of artificial intelligence.

Ensuring Safe Participation

To maintain a secure environment for testing, Google has established strict rules. Researchers are discouraged from testing exploits on real customer projects. Instead, a deterministic proof mechanism has been introduced, allowing safe demonstrations of unauthorized access using a designated service account, as explained by Cote.

Google continues to refine its bug bounty programs to maintain high engagement and reward innovation, as seen with recent adjustments in both its Chrome and open-source bug bounty programs. As the cybersecurity landscape evolves, Google’s initiatives reflect a commitment to incentivizing thorough and responsible security research.

Related discussions include Google’s partial reversal of Chrome bug bounty cuts, narrowing of open-source bug bounty criteria, and comparisons with Microsoft’s $20 million bug bounty program. The ongoing debate about AI’s role in the future of the bug bounty industry remains pertinent.
