Android 17 Enhances Security by Restricting Accessibility Services

Android 17 Enhances Security by Restricting Accessibility Services

Posted on October 2, 2026 By CWS

Google has unveiled a significant security enhancement in Android 17, limiting access to its accessibility services to verified applications categorized as Accessibility Tools when the Advanced Protection feature is active. This update aims to fortify user security by curbing misuse of the API, which has often been targeted by malicious software for financial fraud and malware attacks.

Advanced Protection: A New Security Milestone

Advanced Protection, a comprehensive security setting on Android, integrates all available security features to safeguard devices from potential threats. In its latest iteration, enabling this feature on Android 17 will automatically confine the AccessibilityService API access exclusively to verified applications. According to Google’s announcement on Thursday, this move is designed to close a significant vulnerability while maintaining essential assistive technologies for users who rely on them.

The AccessibilityService API is a robust framework that allows applications to execute background tasks, intercept user interface events, and interact with other applications. Designed primarily to aid users with disabilities, such as those using screen readers or voice controls, its extensive access has been exploited by malicious actors to extract sensitive information and conduct unauthorized activities.

Tackling Misuse of Accessibility Services

Malicious applications often deceive users into enabling accessibility services under false pretenses, turning legitimate features into tools for cyberattacks. These can include unauthorized fund transfers, keylogging, overlaying fake login screens, and granting themselves additional permissions. As these services can interact directly with the screen, they are a prime target for misuse, potentially leading to data theft and malware installation.

Google has been proactive in addressing such vulnerabilities. The introduction of Advanced Protection in Android 17 is a part of a series of measures aimed at preventing abuse of accessibility services by malicious software.

Additional Security Enhancements in Android 17

Beyond accessibility service restrictions, Android 17 introduces several other security improvements. Intrusion Logging provides continuous forensic logging to help investigate sophisticated spyware attacks while preserving user privacy. USB Protection is another new feature that blocks unauthorized access via physical USB connections.

Moreover, the update includes the Disable WebGPU feature, which reduces the risk of browser-based exploits, and the Failed Authentication Lock, a defense mechanism against physical tampering and brute-force attacks. Users can now also view which apps have verified the Advanced Protection status on their devices.

Google has indicated that developers will be alerted when Advanced Protection is activated, enabling them to automatically enable any additional features for users in this category. Users who already have Advanced Protection will receive notifications about these new capabilities, which can be activated via the settings page.

Overall, Android 17’s security enhancements represent a proactive step in protecting users from evolving cyber threats while ensuring that essential assistive technologies remain accessible for those who need them.
