In a sophisticated cyberattack, North Korean hackers successfully infiltrated Binance, leading to a massive heist of digital assets valued at $6.34 billion. The FBI identified the group, known as “TraderTraitor,” as the orchestrators behind this breach, which occurred on October 29, 2026.
Complex Multi-Stage Infiltration
The attack was not a straightforward phishing attempt but rather a meticulously planned, multi-phase operation. It began in June 2026 when a DevOps engineer at Binance downloaded a compromised AI coding tool, disguised as a legitimate Homebrew package. This initial breach allowed the hackers to map out Binance’s wallet infrastructure.
Another incident involved a fake job interview that targeted a second engineer. The attackers posed as a “Project Director” and conducted two interviews using false identities. During the final interview, the engineer was instructed to execute a seemingly harmless task, which turned out to be malicious software that compromised the system.
Exploiting AI Tools and Internal Systems
In October, the hackers leveraged the compromised systems and an internal AI tool to infiltrate further. They gained access to a container deployment token, which enabled them to execute a malicious script. This breach allowed them to transfer large sums from Binance’s wallets, including 233.46 million XRP and substantial amounts of other cryptocurrencies.
The attackers utilized Ethereum’s EIP-7702 feature to obscure their tracks and maintain control over the compromised wallets, circumventing Binance’s security measures. Despite halting withdrawals, the attack persisted due to on-chain delegations that couldn’t be easily reversed.
Response and Recovery Efforts
Binance quickly responded by freezing approximately $2.85 billion of the stolen funds and began a comprehensive system overhaul. The company absorbed the financial loss and assured users that 98% of affected tokens were reimbursed by the end of October. Security enhancements included device replacements, credential revocations, and the implementation of AI-based anomaly detection.
To prevent similar incidents, Binance advises caution regarding job offers that require executing code on work devices. It also suggests limiting internal AI tool permissions and keeping sensitive deployment tokens off personal computers.
Future Cybersecurity Measures
This incident underscores the importance of robust security protocols and proactive threat detection. Organizations are encouraged to monitor account permission changes and develop plans for both key rotation and access revocation during security incidents.
Integrating comprehensive threat intelligence and ensuring that Security Operations Centers (SOC) are well-informed can significantly enhance incident response capabilities and prevent potential breaches.
