Windows Update Installs LG App with McAfee Ads

Windows Update Installs LG App with McAfee Ads

Posted on July 9, 2026 By CWS

Concerns have emerged as Windows Update has reportedly been installing third-party applications without user consent. This follows a user report about an LG monitor-related app that appeared on systems and displayed McAfee advertisements.

User Reports and Discovery

The issue was initially brought to light in the r/pcmasterrace forum on Reddit. A user detailed how an ‘LG Monitor App Installer’ was automatically placed on their system after a Windows update, despite no manual download being performed. The application not only installed without warning but also started showing pop-ups for McAfee antivirus software, even though McAfee was not present on the device.

Further investigation by a Reddit user known as Mags_Smash revealed that this installation occurred via the Microsoft Store as part of a background process. This raises significant concerns about user consent and transparency in software installations.

Technical Insights and Concerns

Windows is capable of automatically installing device-specific applications when connected to certain hardware, such as monitors. In this instance, it seems that LG display connections triggered the installation of related software. This method of deploying software has drawn criticism from privacy advocates due to the lack of transparency.

Technical analysis using Windows Reliability Monitor can trace the installation event. By executing the command ‘perfmon /rel,’ users can track system events and confirm if the app installation stemmed from a Windows Update or a Microsoft Store process.

Preventive Measures and Recommendations

Although no harmful behavior has been noted, the unsolicited nature of these advertisements raises potential security concerns. Users are advised to modify local Group Policy settings to prevent the automatic installation of apps linked to device metadata. Specifically, disabling the policy controlling automatic downloads can avert such installations without explicit user approval.

Organizations or privacy-focused users might also consider disabling the Microsoft Store via group policy to limit background app installations. This incident underscores broader issues within the Windows ecosystem regarding the balance between OEM software distribution and unwanted software.

The lack of clear notification or opt-in options can erode user trust. At present, neither Microsoft nor LG has released an official statement on the matter. Users experiencing similar issues should regularly check and manage recently installed applications and system changes following updates to maintain control over their system environment.
