US Restricts Chinese Humanoid Robot Imports Over Security Concerns

US Restricts Chinese Humanoid Robot Imports Over Security Concerns

Posted on July 29, 2026 By CWS

The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently announced a ban on importing certain foreign-made humanoid robots, citing national security concerns. This move, primarily affecting Chinese manufacturers, has sparked accusations of protectionism from Beijing.

Impact on US-China Relations

This development comes at a critical time as Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the US for discussions with President Donald Trump. The ban targets a sector where China holds approximately 85% of the global market share, potentially straining diplomatic efforts.

The restrictions extend to quadruped robots, commonly known as robotic dogs, with the FCC citing potential cybersecurity threats and supply chain vulnerabilities as reasons for the ban.

Broader Ramifications of the Ban

In addition to robots, the FCC’s ban encompasses power inverters, essential components in renewable energy systems and various appliances. The prohibition could have significant implications for the technology and energy sectors.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr emphasized the necessity of securing supply chains, stating that the ban affects new import versions. This aligns with a series of US restrictions on Chinese products, including drones and advanced technology exports.

China’s Response and Future Outlook

China’s Foreign Ministry has criticized the US measures, arguing that such protectionism undermines US competitiveness and harms both American companies and consumers. The Ministry has vowed to protect Chinese businesses’ interests.

The bans may also disrupt collaborations between US and Chinese tech firms. For instance, Nvidia recently introduced a humanoid robot design incorporating a chassis from China’s Unitree.

Despite these challenges, analysts suggest that China’s domestic market and other international opportunities will sustain its technological advancements. The outcome of this escalating trade tension remains to be seen, with potential implications for global technology and security landscapes.
